Funboy,
This thread saddens me, it is obvious that both you and your wife love each other very much. Though as you have stated/implied your physical body is ailing, it is apparent to me at least that you have a very active and compassionate mind.
I am not sure if you are able to communicate via written notes, and if you tell your wife things via typing, you might try typing up what you are trying to accomplish. I am not sure how "quick" she needs the books gone, but it might be worth it for her, or even yourself if you are able to, box the books up, and or just bag them up (though I shudder to think of the physical abuse a bag of books can take) and find out if your wife is fine with the books being around for another week, or month at most. And if no one is able to come and pick them up in that time period, then toss them out.
To me, books are an art, to be appreciated not just for the text they hold, but by the feel of the pages in your hands, crisp, thin, soft and worn, they all have a feel. Especially the old books. Just looking at packed shelves of books makes me envious that I will never have the time to read everything.
Hopefully your wife can understand your passion in preserving this history, it seems she does as she has done as you requested by sorting out the older books.
Good luck.
