Damn dude...show some respect. She's being a typical woman...that doesn't call for your comment. It calls for sympathy for the OP. :(

Keep the books. Throw out the wife.

Call a library. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd send out a moving truck to grab those books on their expense.

WAIT - are they thrown out yet? Auction them off on ebay, or have a collector look at them and determine their value! Do you have any idea how much that stuff is worth? If she already tossed them, she may have very well tossed out tens of thousands of dollars. :|

With my wife working, and my condition, as much as I would love to keep or sell them I just cant physicaly do that. If anyone close to me wishes to save these books from the trash PLEASE call me! (731)692-3499 and I will do my damnness to make sure these will stay in the house for you to pick up.

I hate to see them go but I cant do anything more then go thgrough and grab the few I can and save I feel are a part of history that really cant be trashed.

Due call a bookseller...or even Goodwill...i am sure they would be more than happy yo come pick them up!!
hell-- Goodwill auctions off collectibles...that would be a good way to do things...
A school might possibly want to pick them up and add them to their library...
A book collector or used book reseller might be willing to pick them up...
Good Luck and God Bless!!

Your wife sounds like a foolish person with no regard for things of value and a wasteful attitude. Why doesn't SHE take those books to a used bookstore like Half Price books? How can anyone justify throwing away perfectly good stuff??

I also don't understand why she wants the library cleared out. What does she want to do with the shelf space??

Edit: Mod made me edit my @ssholery.

First of all, he lives in BFE in western TN. Population of around 2,000 or so.

Seriously.

QFT. This is just the start of the stupidity. I hate butt-in mother in laws because they ruin many a marriage.

Perhaps you people should read up on Funboy's situation before saying such ridiculous things (it doesn't take much to come up with it from what he's said in this thread alone). Show some tact and a little respect for the man's wife. Certainly some books won't be getting in the way of their marraige.

Quick update. She is home and she didnt know about the ones I found, turns out Mother in law, supposedly was not wearing her glasses and didnt bither to even look at them before they got tossed down the stairs (typical attitude with her). She has said she was sorry and for today the weekend after she comes home, and some spare time, she is personnaly going through whats here for me and atleast contact goodwill sometime during the next 3 days before trash pick up. She saved me a few, I didnt know she had, that were found upstairs still so I gave her my appologies but now I am mad at MIL (which you married guys know I cant say one thing about her ;)

I want to go ahead and commend the mods for doing some very deserved slapping. Other people said the same basic things without being so distasteful.

Where in Tennessee? I'm thinking road trip....

I propose this: if someone in this thread can take the time to go visit funboy to pick these up...why not sell some of them and split the money with him? Things like that Pinocchio sound awesome--I'd never sell it if I owned it. But some of the others...why not split the money with him? It would require someone ethical to follow-through, though, of course.

How far outside of Jackson are you? I'm headed down there in a week, if you could even hold on to them that long. It makes me weep to see books get trashed.

Damn, just saw you were in Dyer. I have family in Dyer. I can stop by next weekend if you can hold on to them til then. If not, I understand.

I told her I really didnt want to do that while I am still here but if it bugging her that bad to keep them in a room she doesnt really go into, and it will make heappy, go ahead. just please look at the copyright dates and look for first edditions or ones close or older then 100 years.

If it's your house, tell your mother in law she really doesn't have any say what you do and don't do with your f*cking library. Seriously, if she just dumped them without looking at them because she didn't have her glasses, she probably doesn't give a crap about them or how valuable they could possibly be. With medical bills like I imagine you have, valuables like that could be somewhat of a lifesaver.

Freck, I want those books, but I'm too far away to go get them. You know who else destroy books? The Nazi's.

If you're able to pick up the books, please come back to this thread and tell us about the books you were able to save. :)

I have family members who would kill for some first edition prints of their all time classic favorites.

Wow, that is terrible. If I lived close by, or if you happened to have a first edition copy of The Expert at the Card Table, I would personally come down from PA and pick them all up before anyone threw them out. Please do anything you can to at least give them away to a library or similar institution, just for the sake of history and preservation. Who knows what may be hidden in those books.
