Oh goodie, more fake CPUs. Allegedly "sold by Amazon".

Stopping fake, stolen products or patent infringed products from begin sold on their website has never been their priority. They just care about their bottom line. Sometimes it feels as if even ebay does more to stop corrupt product...

It looks like someone bought a legit 1700, stuffed a fake CPU into the packaging with an old heatsink, and returned it. The warehouse personnel apparently never opened up the package to confirm the contents. Oops!

Amazon warehouse personnel are evaluated primarily on the basis of # of returns processed in given time period. Thus the lack of attention to the content of the return, unfortunately.

Even if they weren't, it's not like the people processing returns can be an expert on everything in the warehouse. Even if they have separate people to work in each category, I still wouldn't expect someone to know what every component that Amazon sells in the Computer category looks like. There was a CPU and a heatsink in the box, if you don't know much about CPUs, that's probably all you'd check for.

if they checked everything people would probably complain that the packaging looked tampered with... it's a lose lose

i'd rather have a tampered package with genuine chip though

In the past 6 months I've been scammed 3 times on Amazon, thankfully Amazon has refunded me for those 3 orders. Two of them even had tracking, I live in Canada and one of them went to Kentucky in the US and the other went to New Jersey and both were delivered and received.

I don't even shop on eBay anymore, apparently that's scammer's paradise now. Used to shop on eBay a lot a decade ago with 100% success since 1999 or whatever year.

I've been buying from Amazon since they were just a bookstore and have not had any problems, but if you sell billions of dollars worth of merchandise every year some are bound to happen.
