I have never understood how somebody could be so close to another person and then immediately develop an overwhelming animosity towards them, so most of the responses in this thread make little sense to me. Your response, on the other hand, makes perfect sense - that this is somebody you cared about for a long time and that you still care about to some extent. That doesn't mean you want to get back together, or that you have any obligation to be her shoulder to cry on, but it does mean it's not unreasonable that you would consider helping her feel better. As long as you're not putting yourself in a position to be hurt by this, do what you want (as you obviously did.)
