And that Draw Something app was bought for like $200 million or so the other week. It seems app development is the next big thing.

Hipsters seem to have lots of money but little sense on what to do with it.

It's the perfect storm for smartphone app developers.

People love photo filters and black/white....

I don't get it though. Its similar to people going crazy for hand writing typography.

It's not the app Facebook wants, it's the subscriber list they want, and the photos. Expect instagram to fade away and be integrated into facebook and features to upload through Google+/Twitter ect to be removed.

pre-internet conde nast and other magazine/newspaper companies ruled the relationship between celeb and worshipper. not anymore.

Eh? How exactly is paying 1,000,000,000 dollars for a feature thats been baked into at modern smart phone camera apps, and that exists in dozens of other apps before that?

As JeffreyLebowski said, its the user list they want. If they were paying 1Bn for the technical features, their share holders should string their board up by their testes for such stupidity. Facebook could have developed an in house app in a week with camera filters, or bought another lesser known camera app for a tiny fraction of what they just paid for Instagram.

instagram has hype and a huge celebrity usage base. p diddy, snoop, taylor smith from the top of my head. many others though including has beens liks slash and sebastian bach (the skid row one who is still alive)

20 years ago if i wanted to read about motley crue i had to buy Metal Edge and hope they had something. now i go to instagram, twitter or facebook and can talk directly to people or at least their publicists in some cases.

we will be reading about this 5 years from now, as peak dot com 2.0.

instragram had like 15 employees or something. and they did the revolutionary of making a service people use, that will uh be replaced by something cooler in like 5 months like pinterest which will be replaced again.

given our current $5 gas, and throwing money aroudnl ike crazy due to insane liquidity in the financial markets (since im sure this was paid for in facebook stock or something) i'm sure we are just at the edge of the next financial collapse.

I fcking hate Instragram and the people who use it. But it's mainly because hipsters and wannabe hipsters use it, and these people with their iDevices look retarded. Ok, I'll remove the hate.

Damn these startups getting bought out for $$$$$$$$$$$$$ like OMGPOP.

pinterest has it's own niche and will probably be bought for it as well. i hear a lot of interior designers love using it to show their work to prospective clients. and my wife uses it for ideas on what to do with kids

They had 13 employees and were bought for $1B.

Youtube had 12 employees and were bought for $1.65B.

And we all know what a huge bust Youtube turned out to be.

Yet another android success story.... oh wait...

My fiance uses Instragram and her and her friends have fun with it. I think people giving Instagram a hard time aren't being fair. It is a well designed app and its fun and has a ton of users.

LOL... comparing Instagram and YouTube.

YouTube is at least 100 times more useful and actually provides a service, whether it be entertainment or knowledge because of user-generated content. That's not to say half the things on YouTube are crap, though, but as a whole it's much more useful than Instagram.

It's a visual Twitter. I think it's neat. I used to be a hater until I tried it. It was neat to watch my distant friends life unfold.
Believe it or not, it's the one program that made people WANT to take better pictures.
Before that, people didn't give a shit that the subjects were backlit and underexposed, or blurry, etc.

Whatever makes you hater's heart rate go irregular...

No, it doesn't. 90% of the pictures posted with it are crap.

So you saying you use it enough to know that 90% of the pictures are crap?

I have a lot of friends that take great photos with it. Maybe you need more creative friends.

you have friends who take great photos, instragram has nothing to do with it. which is why so many of us are confused
