OK I wish I could find some consistency but the machine had been running great Built 4 months ago) until about 2 weeks and the DVD burner would not respond. The machine would come up and the mouse would hang about every 2 seconds and I was able to isolate it to the DVD burner. I RMA'd it.

I have replaced the old burner with a new Pioneer 108 DVD burner. As soon as it came up the first time. The mouse hung and I was only able to move the mouse vertically along a plane. Weird....

Now it gets worse.. Like I said no consistency here. One time the box hung during POST. Another time all letters during POST were scrambled. Another time during POST there was something about Overclocking (which I am not doing on this box). Safe mode hangs sometimes during command line load phase.

The temps are fine according to the BIOS. The processor HS Fan is spinning or I would think it could be this.

Right now thebox is up at the desktop in regular mode and i have copied several files to another machine.

Ideas????

Graphics card???

I am really perplexed

OK...After resetting the BIOS, taking out cards, trying VGA mode in XP it has now came up fine with no errors. I have even ripped 2 DVDs.

Go figure.

This is still a little worrisome.

Yeah andres I am afraid that could be the culprit....

If it is I will never buy Asus. Other people I know have had good luck. Asus and I don't mix.

I have just ripped 15GB in about 20 minutes with no problems.

I think I will update the BIOS anyway and pray.

You failed to mention any system specs. There could be several culprits including the motherboard, the memory, the cpu overheating, or the PSU. Please post system specs, it's hard to troubleshoot hardware problems, when you don't know what the hardware is..

For some reason my link to my system rig was not working so I have changed my system sig.

You should see my system now.

Thanks to all so far.

OK 4 days after the my problems started and then mysteriously disappeared they are back.

Consistently when the computer comes up I get a Windows system error and within 10-15 minutes the screen goes black and it reboots. Since I have so many different problems I have contacted Asus and I am RMAing my sysem board.

They agreed to RMA the board very easily but the paperwork part sucks.

u can RMA it anyTime u want.. but sounds like RAM issue to me.. try to lower front side BUS (>200)
second guess would be - weak or generic power supply

Unlikely but who knows at this point.

As my sig says I running an Antec Sonata that includes a Trupower PS. Early on this troubleshooting process several times the machine would boot into POST and it would have scrambled letters. To me this would not indicate a PS problem. I am RMAing the most obvious first.

Continuing...

I have now replaced the board. It is still in the same shape. Arggg...

How does one verify power??? This is an Antec Sonata case with the Trupower 380 PSU. Nothing is infallible but how would I check. I will start a reload this weekend. ;-(

Any other ideas. I checked the RAM.

My system error log says:

"System Error Error (102) 1003 N/A BS28 Error code 100000ea, parameter1 867e3da8, parameter2 869298a8, parameter3 f7aa6cbc, parameter4 00000001"

It stays up for a few minutes and then reboots:

Save Dump Information None 1001 N/A BS28 The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000ea (0x869e1250, 0x86f5d7a0, 0xf7aaecbc, 0x00000001). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini120904-02.dmp.

Any ideas???

I am checking on the Bugechecks...

OK guys please I need some help here:

RECAP:

My XP/SP2 box listed in my sig started acting really funky about 2 weeks ago.

symptoms:
- I would logon and the mouse would lock so it would only move horizontally

- 2x I would power it on and it had power but no display

- 2x when I powered it on all the letters in the POST were scrambled

- Under XP I am consistently getting a Windows system error and BSOD as documented earlier in this thread and if I leave it running it will reset.

***NOW*** the kicker is I booted up into the BIOS setup screen to let it sit and lo and behold I came back a little later and theletters on the setup were garbled and the box was hung.

I have replaced system board already. Is this a video card problem????

OH please any ideas???

Do you have another rig to test the RAM, DVD Burner (seems like you've had issues with it), etc.? If you can rule out individual components, I'm sure someone could help you.

For now, make sure there are no magnets stuck to the side of your case. :p

Yeah...Unfortunately my other boxes are AMD boxes.

Thanks for reading my problems. My gut instinct is it is the video card. I will pull my other video card out another PC and pray.

I have tried each stick of memory by themselves and the problem is still there.

OK I didn't want to mess with pulling a card from my other box so I bought an ATI 9200 today and I thought I would have less problems and so gfar so good. WoooohOOO.

I have done about 4 hours of encoding.
