Some times I forget how shitty parts of the city/near by areas actually are.

Don't get me wrong - I know there are really (really) shitty parts but I think the jokes I make tend to blur the reality for me. I make jokes about how, out of 20 buildings- 12 are burned out, 2 are pawn+liquor stores, 4 are stripclubs/sex toy shops and 2 are churches and forget that they are not actually jokes but the truth

This random though brought to you today by a trip in and around Detroit as a passenger in a car (Normally I am driving so I don't get to stare in sick fascination as the city rolls by)

We did the Detroit Zoo run then made our way down to Grosse Point for a used book sale. We to I-75 to Mack rd (Don't know why we didn't take 94 but *shrug*) so we passed right through Highland Park

They're doing the right thing by starting downtown witih all of the revitalization efforts and expanding from there. It's a LONG road ahead, but they're at least finally taking the right steps.

And if all you did was drive by on I-75 you didn't see anything. Get off on 6 mile or 7 mile and drive around a bit. Hell to the area around Sinai Grace Hospital. That's some seriously nasty area.

On another note, the Detroit Zoo is full of win.

That is a pretty shitty part of town, how it compares with the shitty parts of other big cities, I don't know. I was in Mexican town on Springwells a couple months ago and I was surprised by the number of people just out walking around. The housing looked pretty bad, but the place looked pretty vibrant.
I have to believe the city is going to get even worse before it gets better. What little of the auto related industry that was still in the city proper has really dwindled to almost nothing and Unemployment is starting to run out for the last of those effected in '09.

We always used to say Windsor was a stones throw from the ghetto. Some of the crap spills over from Detroit. Guns especially. The thugs aren't getting their Glocks from legal Canadian handgun owners, regardless of what the Libs say.

It's a stain on America. Naturally, there doesn't seem to be any political will to fix that. Too much work and too many people to offend. Politicians, social democrats especially, would rather just sit with their thumbs up their asses looking for someone else to blame.

I am pretty sure it's Alter Rd that separates them. On the west side you have old, barely running shit boxes and a ton of boarded up stores. On the other you have nice Lexus and Cadillacs and the boarded up stores decreases rapidly :p

Yeah - I have been down Van *** Rosa Parks Blvd (South of Grand) and 6 mile - but always as the driver. Its a new experience as the passenger being able to actually focus on the issue instead of half paying attention to it

I'd love to go to Detroit some time. I dig urban decay.

It is pretty interesting - in a sad morbid way. We had a couple of hypothetical projects in the less stabby stabby areas when I was going to school for Architecture. It would be one thing if it was confined to a small area but the scope is amazing.

Don't forget teens/early 20s looking to drink!

I love Detroit. I love to see it coming back to life, too. Not everyone who lives there is pure evil. There are good and bad, just like anywhere. There are also a lot of people just trying to get by with what they have.

Went there for the first time in my life last in March 2010. The scale of urban decay and depravity is astounding. If the right people got involved though, the possibility of the turn around of basically an entire city would be phenomenal.
