Ok, so I just got my D-Link DI 804 router today, and went to hook everything up. I actually only wanted it as a switch, as I don't have broadband yet. Anyway, I have 3 comps I want to network, my main system, my laptop, and a server. Both the main and the laptop are running Win98, and the server is running Win2k Advanced Server. So, I get all 3 plugged into the router and I get a message saying "The system has detected a conflict for IP Address 192.168.0.1 with the system having hardware address ***** bla bla bla" Freakin messaga pops up like every 20 seconds and like 7 times at that. Now I only get this message on my main system. Oh dear Lord how do I get rid of it. I can't change the IP for my main system because I still have dial-up (yes, go ahead and laugh) and I need to have the IP dynamically assigned. If someone has any ideas, PLEASE let me know. Thanks in advance.

it sounds like your desktop is set to 192.168.0.1 as well...... change it or set it to auto assign (start-settings-control panel-network-TCP/IP your network card here-IP address), and or maybe both machines have the same name: control panel->network->identification

o yea.. as long as u have internet connection sharing installed or whatever u gonna use you can have a different ip for your network adapters (192.168.x.x is a common local network address for win machines) than for your modem........

g luck

i don't understand why u r getting an ip conflict. local networks like yours should be using the netbuei protocol, no? is netbuei installed on all machines? also, when u get the ip conflict error message, write down the hardware address it gives you. then go to each machine and open an ms-dos window. type in ipconfig, and it should tell u the hardware address of the nic in that system. look for the system(s) which are having the ip conflict(s) and force them to obtain a different ip #. hopefully that will eliminate the error msg. let us know how it goes.

it tells you in the router manual what IP's your computer CANNOT be. Sounds like your computer is sharing the IP address of the router. So every twenty seconds the router is politely asking you to change your computers IP address.
