Because they announced they're cutting 35,000 jobs, closing 5 plants and discontinuing 4 vehicles.

people put way too much emphasis on the DOW, it doesnt affect the economy as much as everyone thinks it does. Getting all worried about stuff like this just hurts consumer confidence.

But if I'm flipping through the channels and I see that he's on, I'm going to stick red hot pokers in my ears.

This may seem like an ignorant statement, but to me "the economy" is nothing more than artificial weather... an extra something for talking heads to discuss on TV. What good does talking of a "possible decline in the economy" actually do??? You only succeed in scaring people into holding onto their cash, not building houses, buying cars, or budgeting "entertainment money".

What causes a slumping economy?

Low consumer confidence.

What causes low consumer confidence?

Three things, as far as I can see: poorly run businesses, crappy products, and people warning that the economy is on the decline.

It comes down to this: if you are running your business correctly, and you have a product people want, you'll be fine.

This really sucks, what with the Ford layoffs... everyone's gonna start pinching pennies (worried that their job may be next), causing decline in sales across the board, leading in to a new crop of layoffs.

I'm not an economy major by any means, so don't take anything I say on this too seriously... just my humble opinion.
