Offside rule in soccer?

When playing soccer, suppose you take a shot, on goal and on target, GK makes the save - then a teammate (offsides at the time of the shot) runs onto the loose ball and scores. Play gets called offsides.

This is getting called offsides all the time when I'm playing FIFA 08, I'm just curious what the correct rule is- I thought if the GK touched the ball, the play was onsides.

Thanks!

FIFA is right.
The goalkeeper touching the ball is the same as a defender touching it

Oh and pro evolution soccer >>>>> FIFA.

When a defender touches the ball, is the offside rule still there? Does there *always* have to be two defenders in front of an attacker for a play to be onside? I thought once a defender touches the ball, offsides didn't apply...

offsides is the worst rule ever invented in the history of sports

mR Toilet think about it for a sec, if the rule was your way, there'd always be a cherrypicker and scoring in soccer would be about 10000 times easier

Yeah, that makes sense, now that I think about it...

So if the GK touches the ball, the play is still offsides- but if any other defender (2nd to last, etc) touched the ball, and an "offsides" player then got possession, the play would still be good?

Am I just making this way, way too hard? :):)

Nah, I would say the 2-line pass call in hockey was the dumbest (thank god that's changed!)

And on a tangent, how is spiking the ball in football NOT intentional grounding? :)

probably because the intent is to stop the clock at the expense of losing a down vs trying to save your ass from losing 15 yards

Yes you are.

And no, even if a defender touches the ball and the player in the offside position touches the ball the play is offside.

Only if the defence starts a new attack (Basically if the defenders control the ball for a few seconds), or if another player from the attacking team touches the ball, the player can touch the ball.

if there are no offsides, there will be campers right outside the goal all game.

Okay, that makes sense, so it's POSSESSION that defines the offside rule, not necessarily a touch. I think this just means I've been watching way too much English soccer on TV...

lol.. campers.

Soccer is a wonderful game.. Offsides actually promotes goal scoring. When a team is on offense, their defenders can push all the way up to mid-field without having to worry too much about a single 'lucky clear' going to a 'camper' waiting to score.

Playing the offsides call can be incredibly fun for defense.. When I was on the soccer team in high school, we were extremely aggressive playing offsides (I was left defense). We would pull up to midfield as soon as the ball was cleared.. It was very tough for the other team to do any unplanned offense. We had team get called offsides more than 20 times on game!

I'd have to disagree on you with that. with those kinds of tactics, all you'd need is a fast striker and one long ball to score goals. How many offside calls are there in a pro-match? 5? 10? and usually at least 20% of them are wrong.

No. Simply no. A good offsides trap defense is hard to counter. It takes a precise run by a forward with a decent clear by the mid or defense, and the forward has to outrun the defenders while still maintaining ball control. In my 17 years of soccer, it never happened. Not one forward could outrun me.

Not really. Imagine 2 guys hanging out around the offensive goal all the time.
Taking away offside will just kill the game.

Wouldn't that in turn leave them 2 men short on defense? = easier to score by the opposing team

In football(soccer) a ball cannot be passed to you when you are ahead of the defenders, in other words u can never be passed the defenders. It is simple.
