Is this a good deal?

I don't even know how I got it....this would be for my aunt.

Not a hot deal. I had an identical system (except for a P4 2.8/533) in my cart for ~ $225 earlier. In addition, the 10% off coupon appears to be DEAD.

This is currently the hottest deal on a Dell, IMO:
http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/460264/

Dimension 8400 with 19" LCD for $499 after instant discount and rebate. Dell will likely cancel it soon though, as the base system is already an Outrageous deal and I doubt they would normally allow a $300 instant off coupon on top of that. Act fast!

Done....just saw it now.

not too hot for 4700. would be nice if 8400

remember the mobo on 8400 is much better than 4700.

8400 = 4 SATA, on board RAID0/1
4700 = 2 SATA, no RAID

not to mention the nicer looking and easier to work with case. more drive room on 8400 too

hmmm..also , was there even a drop at 11:48 EDT? I didn't notice one.

man took me 75 minutes on the phone, but i finally persuaded them to let me to the swap from the sucky replacement system to the better original system

now i get to keep my 3.46EE and my x850 XT. and a case that is not broken. finally something going my way 😀

I know what you mean.

I got an XPS G4 ending in <5 hours, it's barely passed what I paid for it. Here's to praying for some higher bids soon, I was hoping to bank on these G4's.

I don't know why. It's not like ebay'ers are daily readers of Tom's HW. Weird, really, these are fantastic systems with x850 PE's we are talking about. If my 2 don't sell, I'll part them out I guess. Good thing I paid <1200 each.

What do y'all think of this one:

Nice RAM, HD, proc--I could still get a flat screen and keep the total cost under $800 right?

well, it'll drop in about 15..going to go work out.
That system is ice cold. Doesn't even have a DVD burner. For a 4700 like this you should look in sub-$400 range. You can even find a better-configured 8400 in low $400 range. I don't know though if you are using any scripts. Might be tough without them.

decent XPS machine for ebay or use

X850, 3.4 550, 1GB, 2x160 for less than 1400
with the little extras like dual tv tuner, logitech
That is definitely a nice box to have if you feel like splurging on an XPS. I had wasted my 10% off coupon on a system that I later cancelled. Otherwise, I would have seriously considered this. Not that I need a PC with a $500 video card. But it is never about a need on the Hot deals forum. 🙂

Did you look at the specs? DVD burner isn't the only great option to have.

I picked this one up. I just couldn't say no. Damn you Hot Deals forum!!! I went from trying to minimize my computer stuff to buying this monster. With the tuner cards that come with it I can swap out my htpc and use this one for games and tv.

like many good old ebay auction says... "you'll be the envy of all your friends"

that is unless your friends go grab a gen5 when it comes out 😀

edit: just noticed your system has a 1394 card too.. didnt see it when i first posted. who the eff orders a 1394 card when there are already 2 firewire ports standard on the XPS? (1 front 1 rear on SB Audigy 2)?

I might not be seeing what you are seeing, but 1) on-board video, 2) on-board audio, 3) no modem, 4) not even a CD burner, 5) XP Home, 6) Dim 4700, 7) no additional software. The only good thing is it's 3.4GHz. A 160GB HD and 1GB RAM are not that rare. You should be able to find a better-configured 8400 for that price.

For many folks, this can be a better configuration. Slightly slower CPU, only 512MB of memory but comes with a Radeon X300, DVD burner and a modem for only $464. I wouldn't go for it either as you can find an 8400 with same options for this price. Check older posts in this thread.
