Microsoft Wednesday announced two pricing plans for its next generation video game console. When the Xbox 360 goes on sale this holiday season, buyers will be able to purchase a no-frills version for $299.99 or a bells-and-whistles version for $399.99.

The less-expensive core system will feature only the Xbox 360 console with a controller, which has to be plugged into the system to play games. The $400 option will come with a 20 GB hard drive, a wireless controller, a headset (used for talking with other players online) that stylistically matches the Xbox 360 and, for a limited time, a remote control allowing users to more easily access the machine's multimedia functions.

Microsoft also announced the price points for over a dozen Xbox 360 accessories, including stand-alone wireless controllers ($50), detachable 20 GB hard drives ($100), headsets ($20) and Xbox 360 faceplates ($20), which allow users to customize their machine. Those hoping to take advantage of the Xbox 360's oft-touted high definition graphics will either need to purchase the $400 bundle or buy separate component cables (which will sell for $40) along with the basic system. The lower-end package will ship with standard AV cables.

...I dont like the idea of a 360 not having a HDD. This means that developers will probably not use it as much. New DL content strategies effected?

No, it's $100 for

A memory card will probably be $30-40 (which you're going to need if you buy the cheaper one), the wireless controllers will cost more as well. The remote and headset are probably worth about $20. So $100 extra doesn't seem all that bad of a deal.

Depending on the size of the hdd and how hard it is to connect it, you could find a cheaper drive (or bigger one) and put it in today.

Sold seperately, the 20GB HD costs $100. Meaning, those that spend $299 on the "Core" Xbox360 + another $40 on a 64mb memory card are going to be getting ripped off bigtime.

Assuming the Xbox1 emulation profiles are only available on the hard drive, only the $400 version offers backwards compatibility.

it's a marketing strategy, most parents (assuming they'll buy it for their childrens) would buy the "core" 360 wouldn't think it's necessary to spend the extra 100 for the "upgrades". This would force the parents to later get the necessary items separately, such as the high def component cable and maybe the hard drive. Making the core 360 cost only $299 would make the parents believe it's a real bargain but little do they know, it's missing a few important parts. This is just M$'s way into getting those who don't know much about consoles and other things to buy their consoles thinking it's a bargain.

If you wanted to use your own HDD. The HDD's for thie xbox 360 are 2.5" so they are laptop drives.

I also heard the $400 version's HDD is going to have a lot of bonus fotage and game previews preinstalled.

wow I sure won't be buying one at launch at those prices. I'll wait for the first or second price drop. Maybe by then it will be somewhat hacked and modable.
