The free ipod thing was a marketing scam. This is AT users helping out other AT users who might be interested in switching to Vonage's telphone service. If someone here is going to sign up anyway, this way the new user gets a free month, and the person referring gets two.

I really am at a loss to see how you can think this is remotely like the ipod thing.

No vonage in my area. 🙁 I swear the phone company hear is just keeping out the competition. In all of the surrounding communities there are multiple choices for phone service, not here.

No, referrals are unlimited.

This is how they work. You give the Vonage user your email addy. We go into our Vonage account and put your email into a box, and it shoots you an referral email.

If you sign up through that link, you get a free month, and the referrer get's two. It's basically a win win for both parties.

One catch...you need to stay signed up for 90 days. If you cancel before the 91st day, you lose your free month credit, and the referrer loses their credit.

I've been using Packet8 for the longest time. Its incredible with unlimited LD including Canada and local calling for $19.99/m. The quality is superb and I've never had a down time as far as I know. All problems have been on my end and the support has been very helpful.

Vonage works anywhere you have a broadband connection. I guess it is possible your particular area code is not available though, but you can pick any area code you want. 🙂

Yeah, I imagine the quality would be similar between Vonage and Packet8 since they probably use the same technology. Do you get all of the extra features Vonage has with Packet8? It just seems like Vonage is much more popular, though that doesn't mean better I suppose. I had never heard of Packet8 until just recently...

My apt building uses a Sentex system--basically the entry box at the front door that calls the apt, then you push 9 to let them in. VoIP should behave exactly like a normal phone line, right?

Yeah. It works with DTV boxes and such, so I can't imagine why not.

You might be right. I would say worst case scenario you would just need to keep a phone hooked to the old line to hit 9?

edit: duh...nevermind. I see what you mean now (i missed the open the door thing). you would need to check with your apt.

I corrected myself. I didn;t catch the door opening part. That might be an issue you would need to discuss with the apt complex.

ok, sounds like that would work. You would just get the call and dial 9...no reason it wouldn't work IMO. I think what we were thinking was that it was a hard line connection from your apartment to the door. It sounds like the Sentex system is remote.

The way my dad's apartment gate works, is the sentex box calls a phone number, if you press 9 on that phone the door opens, you should need to get the apartment company to change the programed phone number in the sentex box to call your vonage phone.
