Canucks force seventh game

Canadian Press
4/20/2003

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The first-round playoff series between the St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks has quickly gone from lopsided to being a toss-up.

Markus Naslund had a goal and two assists as Vancouver beat St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Sunday night to force a decisive seventh game. "We made it pretty hard on ourselves in the third period," Canucks centre Trevor Linden said. "But all in all we did what we wanted to do and what we wanted to have, and that's an opportunity for a Game 7."

The deciding game will be played Tuesday in Vancocver.

"We're a confident team, we are," said Blues centre Doug Weight, who had two goals and an assist. "We believe we're the better team right now and we've got to go prove it."

Mattias Ohlund had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who scored twice in each of the first two periods. Vancouver had two power-play goals in the second as the Blues repeatedly hurt themselves with ill-advised penalties.

The Blues made it interesting with third-period goals by Eric Boguniecki and Weight as St. Louis outshot Vancouver 13-2 in the period.

"We had a much better third period," forward Cory Stillman said. "If we could have come out like that at the start, it might have been a different game."

St. Louis has never lost a series in which it led 3-1. But Vancouver has come back twice from that deficit to win.

"Momentum can definitely work in your favour," centre Brendan Morrison said. "And I guess we've got it right now."

The Canucks were second in the NHL in goals scored in the regular season and their offence has come to life the last two games. After scoring four goals in the first four contests, Vancouver has nine in the last two, putting constant pressure on goalie Chris Osgood.

Naslund, who finished second in the NHL with 104 points, had one assist in the first three games of the series. In the last three contests he has three goals and two assists.

"He's playing with so much confidence," Canucks coach Marc Crawford said of Naslund. "He's captured the pace of the game, and when skilled players capture the pace and they get the puck they know what to do with it."

Henrik Sedin and Ed Jovanovski both scored power-play goals in the second for Vancouver.

The Blues trailed 4-1 entering the third of the last two games with a chance to end the series.

The Canucks scored on their second shot at 3:49 of the first as Naslund tapped in the rebound of Brendan Morrison's shot.

Weight tied it on a shot from the point on a power play at 10:42 before the Canucks regained control. Ohlund beat a screened Osgood from the left circle during a 4-on-4 at 14:25 of the first.

Sedin made it 3-1 on the rebound of a shot by Ohlund at 8:52 of the second. Jovanovski's rebound shot on another power play made it 4-1 at 16:12.

The Blues finally answered at 6:21 of the third when Boguniecki scored with a backhand shot while on a rush. Weight scored off a cross-ice feed from Scott Mellanby at 10:13, again on a power play.

NOTES - The Blues have outscored the Canucks 10-1 in the third . . . Weight has 12 points in the series. His five goals have come on the power play . . . The Canucks led the NHL with a team-record 54 points on the road in the regular season . . . Blues centre Petr Cajanek made his playoff debut after missing the first five games with a facial laceration.

I was at the game last night. Needless to say, a disappointing performance from the Blues. I was so disgusted that I left my seat for the most of the 2nd period. Glad I came back for the 3rd period though. Looked like the only player that showed up was Doug Weight.

Tomorrow should be a good one :).

What do the St Louis fans think of Osgood? Do you think they will put Johnson in?

The people I've talked to are still behind Osgood. He was great for the first four games of the series. Games 5 & 6 were a different story, but he wasn't terrible. The Blues defense has to step up and protect him a little more like they did in the first four games.

The general consensus is that the team has lost ALL faith in Johnson. In fact, I'd go a step further and say the organ-i-zation has lost faith in him. IMO he'll be dealt in the summer and Osgood signed to a long term deal. Well, I felt this way prior to Osgood's last two starts at least. If he gets lit up tomorrow night, maybe I'd feel differently.

I really doubt Johnson will start tomorrow, but stranger things have happened.

Rumor has it (ESPN) that Al MacInnis will be returning to the lineup. Locally, there has been no info on this so who knows. But if he does, I'd pick the Blues to win. If he doesn't, it's a different game and either team can win.

I don't know if Al MacInnis will come back. If it's a shoulder separation then maybe but that is still dangerous to come back for a playoff game since it will be very very physical. If he broke a collar bone then there is no way he is coming back.

Osgood accuses Cloutier of diving

The Canadian Press
4/21/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - Chris Osgood baited the hook Monday but Dan Cloutier wasn't biting.

Osgood, the St. Louis Blues goaltender, accused his Vancouver Canuck counterpart Cloutier of taking dives to draw penalties during the teams' NHL Western Conference quarter-final playoff. The Canucks have battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the best-of-seven series 3-3 with Game 7 Tuesday night (10:30 p.m. EST, CBC) at G.M. Place.

"He's been diving," Osgood said without hesitation following the St. Louis practice.

"He's been diving a bit.

"I'm not going to dive and if a guy hits me after I stop the puck I'm not going to flail myself back. It's not the way the game is supposed to be played. Stand in there and take your shots and your hits."

Cloutier, who celebrates his 27th birthday Tuesday, chuckled when told of Osgood's rant.

"I'm not going to comment on that," he said with a grin. "I don't pay attention to the newspaper and media and I didn't hear anything about it. It doesn't bother me at all."

Osgood was even more vocal Sunday night in St. Louis after the Blues were defeated 4-3 in Game 6.

"You're constantly getting hit, slew-footed and they're not calling it," he told a St. Louis newspaper.

"We're getting it all against us and the other guy is down there diving. It's ridiculous. I can dive too. I can fake like I've been hit. But I'm not going to."

Of the two goaltenders Cloutier appeared to take the most abuse Sunday. The Blues' Eric Boguniecki was called for goaltender interference after crashing into Cloutier.

During the game Osgood, obtained from the New York Islanders at the trading deadline, was giving a slashing penalty for whacking Vancouver's Matt Cooke.

That call still had Osgood shaking his head Monday.

"I tapped him a little behind the legs," said Osgood, who won two Stanley Cups while with the Detroit Red Wings.

"It was more or less a love tap than anything," said Osgood.

"To get a penalty for that I might as well do something 10 times worse."

Cooke chortled over Osgood's version of history.

"My leg still hurts," he said.

Canuck forward Trent Klatt has also felt Osgood's wrath. He said the Blues goaltender tried to head butt him during Game 5.

"I can show you a few marks and they're not little hearts on my legs," said Klatt.

"It's just part of the game. There's people diving all over the place. It's just not on our team."

Canuck defenceman Mattias Ohlund was still mystified with the interference call he was given Sunday after the Blues' Shjon Podein dropped like he'd been shot when Ohlund touched him. The penalty resulted in a St. Louis power play goal.

"He fell down very easily," said Ohlund.

"It was a big goal for them. You don't want that to be a factor late in the game."

The only time I saw Cloutier go down was on that Boguniecki play, and Cloutier was definitely run into. Osgood was ~200 feet away and most certainly had some obstruction in his view. Ah well. If the refs let them play and don't try to even up the calls any more, the Canucks will do great.
