Canucks battle Stars in Big D

Sports Ticker
3/17/2003

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Stars try to hang on to second place in the Western Conference on Monday when they host the Vancouver Canucks.

Vancouver clinched a playoff spot on Saturday despite losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs, 1-0.

Vancouver centre Mats Lindgren left the game early with an upper body injury and Brad May was carried off on a stretcher after a hit from Toronto's Mats Sundin in the second period. May suffered a concussion and is out indefinitely.

The Stars are one point behind first-place Detroit in the Western Conference and are just two points ahead of the Canucks. Vancouver has one more victory than Dallas with 10 games remaining for both teams, which will be the deciding factor if both finish the season tied in points.

Dallas has won the first two meetings with Vancouver this season and is trying to win the season series for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign.

The Stars completed a 1-2-0 road trip with a 4-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Jason Arnott had two goals and Stu Barnes scored his first goal with Dallas, which is five points behind league-leading Ottawa.

The Stars have lost consecutive games for the first time since losing three straight games from December 21-26.

Dallas has just one loss in its last seven games at American Airlines Arena (4-1-2) and has the league's second-best home record at 24-4-6-1.

Too bad about May. Good to hear he'll be back before the playoffs though.

I wonder if Cloutier will start tonight or tomorrow?

Have the faith brother... have the faith.

I don't really mind so long as he's back by the second round though. The first round shouldn't be too bad unless we get overtaken by Colorado. In the second we're most likely gonna be facing one of Dallas, St. Louis, Detroit, or Colorado, so we gotta come with our A-game.

I have faith but I also have semi inside reports from a friend who plays ice hockey with a former Canucks team doctor who still keeps in contact with the other team doctors :D

Just thought I'd let everyone in the thread know:

March 30th following the PPV game they will be airing a special treat for us. Game 7 of the 1994 Canucks/Flames series in it's entirety!!!

I think it may be my fault too. I emailed orca bay and asked for them to put up a clip of THE save on canucks.com and I got an email back saying that they're putting the entire game on PPV!!!

:D

Okay, they look like a bunch of 13 year olds out there. I don't think there was one clean pass by the Canucks all period. Morrison looked lazy on that goal too. Gotta pick it up boys.

Bertuzzi leads Canucks over Stars

Canadian Press
3/17/2003

DALLAS (AP) - Although the Vancouver Canucks have been struggling lately, it hasn't been Todd Bertuzzi's fault.

Bertuzzi continued his recent roll with three goals, two on power plays, to tie for the league lead and set his career high in points as the Canucks beat the Dallas Stars 4-2 Monday night in a showdown between Western Conference division leaders.

Pat Kavanagh added his first NHL goal and rookie goaltender Alexander Auld stopped 26 shots as Vancouver matched Dallas with 95 points, second to Detroit's 96. The Canucks hold the tiebreaker over the Stars because they have two more wins.

``It was a desperate effort by us,'' said Bertuzzi, who has 12 goals in 13 games. ``Even though we're at the top of the standings, we're still a desperate team.''

Bertuzzi has 42 goals this season, matching teammate Markus Naslund and Ottawa's Marian Hossa. His third career hat trick and first this season gives him 86 points, one more than he had last season.

``I'm just trying to do anything to contribute to our team's success,'' he said.

As a team, Vancouver also has one more point than last season. The Red Wings, who have won 15 of the last 17, still have the edge in the race for the top seed because they have one more game left than the other division leaders.

The Stars and Canucks had been 1-2 in the West for months until losing their goaltenders. Now both are in a tight race for playoff positioning with nine games left, including another head-to-head meeting in Vancouver on March 25.

Dallas has lost three straight in regulation for the first time since December.

The Stars are 6-6-3-1 since all-star goalie Marty Turco sprained an ankle; they're 0-4-1-1 against playoff teams in that span. This was the second straight game goalie Ron Tugnutt allowed four goals.

``Right now, our team is finding ways to lose,'' said coach Dave Tippett. ``We can't focus on the standings. If you play well, the standings will take care of themselves.''

The good news for the Canucks is that goalie Dan Cloutier could return from a sprained knee as soon as Tuesday in St. Louis. If he can't, Auld deserves another start after a second straight solid game.

Auld, whose only previous career win was by the same score in the same building in January 2002, had 22 saves in a 1-0 loss to Toronto on Saturday.

``I just want to keep it going,'' Auld said. ``I'm loving every minute of it.''

Dallas outshot Vancouver 14-4 in the first period. But only Scott Young, who was coming off a two-game suspension, could beat Auld, knocking in a backhander midway through the period.

Bertuzzi's power-play goals came 4:30 apart in the second period, putting Vancouver ahead 2-1.

His first goal came on a two-man advantage, when he caught Tugnutt leaning the wrong way and slid the puck under him. The next one came when he redirected a shot by Brent Sopel, flipping it over Tugnutt.

``Penalties were the key,'' Tippett said. ``When they went 5-on-3, that was the break that got them into the game. Unlike us, they took advantage of their power play.''

The Stars were 0-for-5 on the power play, and had the extra man for 2:27 longer than the Canucks.

Vancouver stretched the lead when Kavanagh, called up Sunday and playing his second NHL game, put the puck into an open net after Tugnutt was knocked down.

Bertuzzi's capper came on a breakaway; Dallas' Derian Hatcher dived to stop him at the blue-line and missed.

``Todd was outstanding tonight and we had other guys who also stepped up,'' said Canucks coach Marc Crawford. ``We had everybody on board tonight.''

Notes: Naslund has one goal his last 10 games. ... Dallas had won the two previous meetings by a combined 8-1. ... Vancouver already was expected to be without left-winger Brad May and centre Mats Lindgren, both injured Saturday against Toronto. Defenceman Mattias Ohlund also was scratched with an injury. Three players were called up from AHL Manitoba to replace them and two (Kavanagh and Jason King) were used.

Canucks look to gain ground

The Sports Network
3/18/2003

(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks try to gain some ground in the Western Conference playoff race tonight when they head to St. Louis to face off with the Blues at the Savvis Center.

Todd Bertuzzi recorded his first hat trick of the season and third of his career, leading the Canucks to a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday.

Pat Kavanagh posted his first NHL goal and Alexander Auld turned away 26 of the 28 shots he faced for Vancouver, which improved to 7-1-4-1 in its last 13 games on the road.

Bertuzzi, with 42 markers, is now tied for the NHL lead with teammate Markus Naslund and Ottawa's Marian Hossa.

With the win, the Canucks have pulled even with Dallas at 95 points for the second seed in the Western Conference. Detroit, which will play the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins tonight, is on top with 96 points.

Earlier on Monday it was learned that newly acquired forward Brad May would miss at least a week after suffering a concussion at the hands of Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. After being carried off the ice on a stretcher, May underwent neurological tests at a local hospital. The Canucks aren't sure when May will play again.

Vancouver will head home for four games following tonight's tilt and is 22-8-6-1 on the road this season.

St. Louis, currently tied for fourth in the West with 89 points, comes into Tuesday's contest riding a three-game unbeaten string after Saturday's 1-0 win over the Nashville Predators. With a win tonight the Blues will clinch a playoff spot.

Cory Stillman's goal with four minutes left in the third period lifted St. Louis to the win, while Chris Osgood's third shutout of the season gave the Blues their sixth win in eight games (6-1-1).

Osgood stopped 35 shots to post the 37th shutout of his career and first since joining St. Louis in a trade with the New York Islanders.

Pavol Demitra and Eric Boguniecki each notched an assist for the Blues, who are tied with Colorado in the conference.

Vancouver, which is 2-0-1 this season against the Blues, is unbeaten in its last four versus St. Louis (2-0-2). The Canucks, though, are just 2-9-1 in their last 12 trips to the Gateway City.

NAslund almost popped that one in.

Cloutier is looking fantastic, he even almost got the one that went in, essentially he's the one that deflected it in. This game is looking very well for us.

2-1 after 1. Go Canucks!
