S11E01 - JUNE 22, 2008

It's been a while, but Top Gear is ready to snap, crackle and misfire its way back onto your telly screens on Sunday 22 June at 8pm on BBC Two. Hide the remote and set bear traps around the sofa, because this one's set to be a cracker.

In the first show of the new series, Jeremy, Richard and James dispense top tips on fuel consumption - who said they don't do proper consumer advice? - and The Stig gets back to what he does best: power testing Ferrari's awesome 430 Scuderia.

It's quicker around Maranello than the Enzo, so how will it do on the test track?

James introduces TG's newest team member, but don't worry, despite what the message boards are saying, the new character isn't replacing any of the presenters.

And the big film at the end of the show sees a new challenge being laid down for them; can they build better police cars than the real ones, while at the same time saving the taxpayers' money? They only get a thousand pounds, mind.

There's also a change to the regular Star in a Reasonably Priced Car format that sees the double team of the Sunday Night Project's Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr trying their best to be the, erm, best.

Eh, wonderful indeed :) I think the opinions are often terribly flawed, but it's a great show. As for German fanboyism, I don't see it so much. Clarkson is the de-facto leader, and he rails on and on about how iDrive is garbage and how the 911 is a 'beeetle'. If anything, I see glowing reviews of no merit of things like Fiat and Alfa Romeo. I see more Italian boot-licking than I do of ze Germanz!

Clarckson hates everyone equally, it's just the typical fake American cattlehumping patriot like yourself that can get offended by a car show

Sweet! FYI....there's an interview with the executive producer over on their website that came out a few weeks ago for those on the email list. He hinted as some interesting races to come: here

Tell me about it...if you read his articles he puts the Germans down in nearly every article...I quote from his editorial in this months Top Gear magazine:

"By rights, we should all hate Fernando Alonso. After his hissy fits last year, he should be Liverpool, Manchester United, arsenal, Fred West, and Germany all rolled into one. We should whoop and holler every time his car breaks down." (he and his son are Chelsea fans by the way...ewww)

Actually your comment makes me think you've read/seen very little of his material.

lol well I've watched the last 5 or so seasons of Top Gear. I don't think he's all that biased towards or against much really, he just likes to rant, which makes good television :) However, he does seem to love to rant about the US more than anything else, and he always seems to have glowing things to say about the Italian cars, even if mostly in an abstract/emotional respect rather than on function itself.

Agreed...his motives are purely for entertainment although he has a soft spot for Italian cars...but honestly...don't we all.

I think his penchant for making fun of the US is purely for entertainment purposes. We're an easy target and 95% (if not more) of his viewership is immediately going to think it is funny since most of the world finds it funny to make fun of the US. While this might offend some people...my take on it is to lighten up and laugh at ourselves.

Awesome!

I tried to watch a few episodes of her German show, but believe it or not, it didn't occur to me until I started watching that I wouldn't be able to understand a word of it. Though there are some... er... "special" words that are pretty similar in German... and Sabine uses those words A LOT, especially when she is losing. ;)

I can't wait either. The only beef I have is I hope there's more car stuff. It seems like they're trying to make it funny and entertaining too much. The balance between cars and humor was tipped towards humor in the last series. Still, can't wait to download, I mean watch, the new series.

Yeah he is right. They definitely show more love for the Italian cars that really aren't that great. Also anything Aston Martin, Clarkon will pop wood. Even though the build quality sucks. Seems like every time they test one they break it and they have to send it back to Aston to get fixed or have the techs come out to the track to fix it.
Despite all their American hating, I still love the show. I think the biggest appeal for me is you've got 3 average guys like you or I reviewing cars average guys never get to drive. I don't think they give the American cars a fair shake when they review them though. The episode they reviewed the Z06 and totally trash talked it was pretty lame. Solid lifters and horrible exhaust note, yada yada. They were comparing the vette to a Ferrari or a Lamborghini when it's more in the range of a Porsche or a Beamer M-series.

IIRC clarkson compared the ZO6 with the ferrari 575 on their cosmetic, performance aspects, stating how the ZO6 costs half as much, but its stiff suspension is hard to live with, then went on and conclude that the regular C6 (which clarkson loves) is a much better bargain.

he also loves the ford GT even after he encounters a number of reliability problems, and sang praises for the brute power of the SRT-10, and also enjoyed the ford GTX-1.

his criticisms concerning the mustang GT500's soft suspension, the crappiness of the 300C, and the cheap plastic interior of the $98,000 XLR-V rings true.

in my opinions his criticisms are sometimes harsh and ridiculous, but they are not unfounded.

and you have to admit, aston martin's have that "bond factor" in them and i think most people would agree that italian cars are much better designed cosmetically compared to offerings from other parts of the world.
