what the hell...is there any way to undo this update? I'm sick of having to do all those steps just to turn off the damn mobile network

So far as I know, there's no way to roll back. Why do you need to turn off mobile data?
Everyday I work in a basement level of a building for work with no mobile access. My battery dies in less than 90 minutes of searching for the signal if I don't turn it off

Yeah it is, about time. If only I could get Swype to stop capitalizing "God" every time I typed it now. And the new add word method is kind of tedious.Yes that appears to be fixed thank God
I get solid 4G in most of LA, but there are certain places where I drop to 3G. When that happens, I will get 4G back within a few seconds of moving to an area with better reception. However, if I have open data sockets I will remain locked at the slower data speed until the data radio becomes idle.
If you can't find the app that is keeping data sockets open, try installing Dazzle Configurable Switcher. This app has a single widget button for toggling all data radios On/Off. One touch turns the radios off, one touch turns them back on. So, by using this widget you can get 4G back easily, assuming you are getting a good 4G signal. No need for a reboot and you don't even have to quit any streaming apps. As soon as the connection returns, everything usually picks up where it left off.
i go to bed with 4g ...
You might also try the LTE On/Off app. Use this to put your phone in 4g-only mode, it may prevent the 3g/1x handoff you are experiencing.
the phone will hand-off to 1x/3g/4g whenever you have bad signal, even if you leave it on LTE only.
If true, that sucks. I've had great success locking Verizon's mifi hotspots on 4g by turning off 3g/1x modes. As long as you have good 4g reception, the result has been a rock solid 4g connection. I actually have a client running an entire office on this solution while they wait for their T1 to be installed. They say its equivalent or better performance than the hard line internet at their old location!
No Airplane mode with Gingersense?
there's airplane mode but I still want to be able to receive/send calls and texts.
You could do airplane mode + wifi on (yes, it's possible to remain in airplane mode with wifi on). Then make sure your Google Voice number is set to forward incoming texts to email (yes, replying to the emails will convert back to texts for the recipient), and install Groove IP to place & receive GV calls over wifi. No battery drain because your phone won't even be searching for a cell tower in airplane mode, only wifi would be active.
This phone seems to be getting worse and worse about signal handoffs. It keeps getting stuck in Wifi when there's no available Wifi, and refuses to shift to 1X/3G. Sometimes it'll even show 3G, but still apps will be looking through Wifi. Reboot is the only sure fix... for a little while.
