Official Thread: Justify 9700pro -> 9800pro

After reading this line at Tomshardware, "Owners of a Radeon 9700 PR need not worry, though. Their card has not suddenly become obsolete because of the Radeon 9800 PRO. While there is a difference between the two, it isn't a dramatic one, and certainly nowhere near enough to justify an upgrade, in our opinion. "

Just got a 9700pro last weekend for 299 at circuit city.
Wondering if it would be wise/beneficial to take it back, get my money, and wait 7 days for the 9800pro.

I'm sure others wonder this too.
Maybe we can get some comments/responses

Well, the 9800 will retail for 399$. So let's say it 360-370$ on the web in a couple of weeks...

If you have the extra $$, then I'd go for it. Personally, I bought my 9700 in September so I'd lose more money by selling it and getting a 9800, which wouldn't be worth it.

How long can be expected before an 9800 All In Wonder is released? I was going to buy the 9700 Pro All In Wonder, but now I am considering waiting for the 9800 version. It looks like the 9800 Pro will be just a bit more than the 9700 Pro All In Wonder, but I'd hate to lose the TV functions just to go with the newer card. I imagine the 9800 All In Wonder will run $450 USD or more?

I actually saw that the 9800 will be $350, so I would sell or return the 9700 and wait a few weeks for the 9800.

With that AthlonXP 2100 of yours, you probably will only see slight performance improvement. I'd save your cash and get a faster cpu, which would definately scale the 9700 further up on the performance ladder. 🙂

already haveing a 9700pro i see absolutly no reason to upgrade. however if it died today i would wait and get the 9800pro as soon as i could. so i your case i would call it a toss up, just a matter of if you want to go through the effort and pay the difference in price.

It depends on what you want from your games. From what I got out of Anands preview was that the 9800 Pro GPU in itself is about 10% faster with AA/AF, and that's not even including the increased clock speeds. Surely with a such a board you'd want to crank up some of the pretty ness for many of your games, the 9800 Pro you have a lot more room to do just that. I'd go with the 9800 Pro, the improved/more efficient core is what's done it for me.

The AIW's usually come out six months later.. I actually have an AIW 9700 pro i'm selling - want to get the 9800 PRO when it comes out (then just couple it up with a TV card). Come to think of it, I don't think it even makes sense for ATI to release an AIW 9800 pro as the current one is very close performance wise.

My thoughts exactly. There really isn't much reason for ATI to refresh their AIW with a 9800 AIW, it isn't like there are a boat load of boards that can compete with what the 9700 AIW offers.

A 9900 AIW (or something like that 😉) might be more reasonable. Some insane AIW with 256MB of ram, hey, they doubled for the 128MB 8500 AIW

If I were you then I'd definitely do it.

I probably won't upgrade though because I've had my 9700 Pro since September last year and the performance gain from the 9800 Pro doesn't justify the price IMO.

Do you guys think that the 9700 will drop in price any time soon?I just bought one and will get the price matched at BB.I payed $299 for it by the way.

i cant see why it would, in my openion it is very competitivly priced at the moment. anything less than its current price would be blatently underselling it at this point.

ya, i don't know what that is all about with the warez popups but they make good stuff realy, that 3danalyze is like the only way you can make gta3 run smooth on anything but a geforce from what i understand. also they have a great fsaa tester program.

I would not bother to bring your 9700 pro back. It's an awsome card. I would wait for the R400 to hit the market in the coming months. That is supposedly going to be a "real" upgrade. IMO...

i douvt its until next year, i mean even with a 6 month product cycle it should be out before next year considering that the R350 is out and the RV350 so i bet ther 400m isnt that far away

I just got a AiW 9700 Pro about 2 weeks ago and very happy with it the 9800 Pro looks like a great card but I think I will pass it up unitl I build my next PC in about 2 years. Also at Rage3d.com they have a link up talking about the CATTALYST 3.2 drivers about their s features and a sneek peek at 3.3 form an ATI employ saying that 3.3 will give the 9700 cards a big performance boost.

Here is the link Rage3d.com
