Dear All:

Created my first character yesterday and I'm currently a lvl 11 Jedi Knight and just got off the start planet. Before heading to Coruscant, wanted to play around with the Crew Skills and, given my relative unfamiliarity with the system, was hoping to get the thoughts on a proposed set:

Archaeology
Artifice
Underworld Trading

I had intended to take Slicing as a third, but read on this thread that it's been nerfed so I thought it best to choose something else. Also, are the selected skills set in stone, viz. can you change from your initial selection?

Thanks, in advance, and I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts or insight.

Regards,

Well, I'm currently not able to successfully download and install the latest patch. Seems to be a pretty common issue that has gone completely ignored by Bioware. What a joke.

Artifice and Archeology go together since Archeology lets you gather the crystals and artifact fragments off the ground and get more through missions.

For Artifice you should pick Treasure Hunting instead of Underworld Trading as your mission skill. Underworld Trading gives you materials for Synthweaving.

I'm thinking about turning myself into a hunter gatherer: slicing/ scavenging/bio analysis. Run around and hoard materials while I run slicing missions 24/7 with all companions. Thoughts?

It seems you can't create a republic alt and email him items from an empire character like you can email an empire alt stuff. Is there any way around it?

Does anyone actually do Synthweaving as a craft? I get silk up the bunghole from Underworld Trading, yet I cannot sell a single strand of it on the AH and I never even see any for sale on there, tonnes of other crafting materials, but no silk. o_O

Have a friend go to the Nar Shaddaa GTN at the same time as you and hope no one intercepts the 10 credit armor before you grab...

Man, this patch is a mess. Ilum is completely broken if you are republic. They are fixing it but not after people spawn camped for dozens and dozens of valor ranks. The worst part about being spawn camped is you can't even leave the planet, since you need to be able to stand uninterrupted for a short time to use a fleet pass or something. My FPS took a drop with this patch (i was already using AA before so its not that), the whole character responsiveness issue actually feels worse. They are clearly doing something behind the scenes to try and fix this but whatever they did made it worse for me.

They need some kind of solution for massive faction imbalance. When a server is 5:1 empire:republic there needs to be some kind of incentive for playing on the underpopulated side. Free realm transfers for over-populated sides to other realms without severe population issues would be a nice start. Something like buffs (both to character power and reward gains) for the underdog side would do well to encourage population balance. I am talking about buffs in NON-instanced pvp where its 50 empire vs. 10 republic and absolutely hopeless. Not warzones.

Also now at 50 I'm having a hard time finding reliable flashpoint groups. One can only sit and spam general chat in the fleet for so long, and this is even as a healer...I actually miss dungeon finder in WoW, even though it has its drawbacks as least you can play.

I've been 50 for a few days and the game just isn't sitting well right now. I'd probably feel better as empire but it took over a month to level to 50 for me and I'm not in the mood to re-level again so soon. I think I'll take a week or 2 off the game and come back and see if things are any better or I feel any different.

I do, switch sides :)

I took Slicing, Archeology and Synthweaving. It's a royal PITA not having Underworld Trading as if you want to do higher end crafting it almost always requires metal from the UT missions so I end up getting clobbered on the GTN buying that crap. My only savior is Slicing produces enough income so I don't go broke.

I'm thinking about turning myself into a hunter gatherer: slicing/ scavenging/bio analysis. Run around and hoard materials while I run slicing missions 24/7 with all companions. Thoughts?

It's kind of addicting, I turn on 'resource' from the map and literary bounce all over the place trying to get every material I can even if it gets me killed. So I alternate sending my companions out on slicing missions and doing sythweaving while I collect resources from the map and do missions.

I just reached synthweaving = 400 with my JK Guardian today, so yes :)

At least on Bergeren Colony the plain silks are almost worthless in GTN since synthweavers normally take Underworld Trading themselves and have more than they need. The purple silks are very expensive since you can only get them from critical successes on missions.

Metals are much more valuable than plain silks, my guess is that metals are from UT only while silks are both UT and Diplomacy.

This could vary by server, and depend on how many crafters have enough bountiful and rich missions to keep themselves supplied.

Dunno about Diplo, but I'm pretty sure the reason metals > silks is that every Armormech blue requires a metal. Heavy (and medium?) Synth also = metal, which means that silk is only necessary for consular gear.

Actually, the reason why metals are more expensive is demand... given that Synthweaving, Armortech, Armstech AND Cybertech all require the use of metals. Only Synthweaving and Artifice require silks.

At one point yesterday, there was 760 Sith to 58 Republic in Ilum at one time. Got so bad that a second "instance" of Ilum spawned.. which a couple of my guildies took advantage of to get their Daily done. And to get it done, they had to hunt down "armor" pieces that randomly spawned in the area.. 30 of them for each one. Took them about 90 minutes to complete. Not worth it in my opinion.

Bioware needs to take a serious look at Faction numbers and try to nip it in the bud sooner rather than later.

There will be nothing done about pop balance unless they add faction specific login queues and that's just shy of pigs flying.

Empire is better. Deal with it. (This PSA brought you by SuckItPubs, INC.) :p

I'm not sure how they could fix it, honestly.

Silks are definitely in no demand on my server. Metals on the other hand...sell ok. I am 400 synthweaving. i usually just ask my guild for the epic silks and get all i need. Most have UT and are running missions constantly...and doing the mission discoveries as well and getting silk.

biggest problem i have is theres hardly anything to make that will sell. I already made my rakata bracer and belt. other than that i've been tryign to get mats to make a few of the raid level dropped schems but need the boss mob drops for those.

This patch is a mess. Tons of crap they "fixed" didnt actually get fixed. I still have quests i cant abandon. There are still overwhelming amounts of bugs. My guild page will stop updating requiring me to reload the ui, Eternity Vault pylons are still bugged to crap, they over nerfed the crap out of SoA....the list can go on.

And ilum.....

They need some kind of solution for massive faction imbalance. When a server is 5:1 empire:republic there needs to be some kind of incentive for playing on the underpopulated side. Free realm transfers for over-populated sides to other realms without severe population issues would be a nice start. Bioware needs ot realize world pvp just doesnt work. This patch just proves that if you make it beneficial to do world pvp then imbalances will rule the day. Giving bolster to the side that is outnumbered does no good when its 30 vs 5-10. Theres just to many stuns/kicks/cc's to really have bolster help. They honestly need to just scrap ilum as a valor related pvp zone. Add in a new rep or something and different items you can get that re pvp tier 1 or 2 level.

What is just sad is bioware hardly even admits there is a problem. There only real comment has been on putting population caps in place cause it effects performance to much......i mean come on this is their solution for now? basically saying dont go there.....really?

"We encourage players to avoid Ilum until our patch is deployed. As a temporary measure we will be disabling taxi services which would normally take players into the Open World PvP area. However, players will still be able to taxi out of the area."

Also now at 50 I'm having a hard time finding reliable flashpoint groups. One can only sit and spam general chat in the fleet for so long, and this is even as a healer...I actually miss dungeon finder in WoW, even though it has its drawbacks as least you can play.

it can be hard to find groups from people i've talked to. most guys have their groups they already run with. i pretty much only go with my guild or one guy i raid with. Same with others in my guild..its guildies or nothing. Just have to keep at it, maybe try finding a guild with more 50's :)

and they did do good...level 50 brackets are nice. The new bosses in hutt hospitality were also fun. Though trash was harder and we wiped a few time to trash mobs lol. The new instance felt long and a bit boring to me (a healer). But nice to see they do have decent content. new bosses also werent buggy which was awesome!

There's plenty of things they can do, for example what lupi suggested. Personally, I find the idea of pop-locking a particular faction from being able to put more people on a server on that faction also a great idea. Other games have also done thing such as population incentives, where a faction with lesser populations got incentives such as an XP bonus, or a small % power/damage/healing bonus for PVP, etc.

To be honest, I'm not sure why everybody and their mother wants to play Empire anyway. Other than the fact that Empire counterparts have more abilities with CC components that also do damage than Republic classes do.

My decision was based purely on me wanting to be a super evil Sith. The game certainly delivered, that's for sure.

Hmm... patch was supposed to be pushed at 8am CST. It's not 9:58am CST and the forums/website is down. It was up/working fine around 9:20am... I wonder what they broke this time.

The launcher says downtime is from 1030-1430 ET for the patch. You can still login, but all the servers are down.

Ok, thanks for the info on the silks, looks like I should just vend them. I would gladly give them to people here, but nobody seems to need them among the guildies either.

I make my money from selling metals, so the silk does not matter much, I just found it odd that I could not sell purple silks on the AH.

@11 or 12, you're horribly gimped even with bolstering mainly because you only have a handful of abilities - and you're especially lacking any sort of mitigation abilities at that level.

IMHO warzones become relatively fun starting around 18ish and really fun around 22-24. That's when you have most of the meat'n'potatoes abilities for your class, you have your CC breaker, your class CC/stuns, and more importantly somewhat better gear.

Best part imho about warzones is the xp, the credits and the commendations. For 15 minutes of pvp, you generally get a couple quests worth of XP whether you win or lose. The amount of credits earned is really useful (At level 25 I get about 2000 credits per match). The commendations are really nice too - the level 24 pvp gear you can buy with the warzone commendations will pretty much outstrip any other gear you have at that point. You also get valor, which is basically pvp xp.

Biggest stigma I think people have to get over in the warzones is that you get all the aforementioned things whether you win or lose.

I beg to differ here.. a L10 of any class will throw down HUGE numbers especially in the new non 50 system

As they have the largest bolster. they may not have ALL the abilties but one ones they do have decimate the opposition.
it is not uncommon at all to see L10s have super kills and numbers.

this is my favorite time to PVP. i almost always flat level PVP and BT to 16.. then do story on DK then pvp level to 22ish then do balmora and keep it going so I'm overleveled for all content making it a breeze to do.

by doing this you also keep your PVP rank around your same level.

At level 25, I go out of my way to pick on anything smaller than me. In the new system, I'm not terribly afraid of anything up to about 38, and I know I have a fair shot at 40+.

Yeah, lowbies can crit hard, but their damage is all over the place. At level 25, they're lucky to do about 40% of my HP (level 28 shadow) while I pay little attention to them. That and they're not going anywhere either.

It's when there's certain mitigations that are used (mostly by the higher levels) that I have any trouble one on one. Even so, going against a level 49 for me is easy - especially if things go wrong, because I have enough mitigation to get the hell out of dodge and regroup.

Now if you leave a level 11 alone to pick people off, particularly at range - well then you're asking for trouble as yes, they can sustain a bit higher damage over time.
