Er, for tanking what I really meant was on another character, should that be a sith inquisitor spec'd for damaged, is it easier to go through the levels because he can tank better than the agent? lol some of these elite mobs I have to kill on the storyline I'm kiting them around cover while companion attacks.
Um, you're doing it wrong. Have Kaliyo attack first and grab aggro while you burn down the other enemies. Turn on all her AOEs and her taunt. At some point -- if IA proceeds like Smuggler -- you'll actually want to switch to a DPS/DPS combo (both you and your companion) to kill stuff with incredible speed, and only then should you be the main damage soaker.

as a shadow, I'm still using my crap tank lizard. when I did sith warrior I liked the dps companion, but dps comes last for a shadow and putting the healer in dps mode doesn't cut it.

If you want to level up optimally, you do them. They are somewhat fun at first anyway.

I bet more people will do them if more/better stuff appears in the fleet comm vendor.

True.
But they do suck. badly. Feels totally like an afterthought. I do them for money, but hate spending money on ship upgrades, just so I can continue to do relevant crappy ass arcade space missions.

It's a personal thing. I don't think they suck badly, but they aren't great either. The money is ok for sub-20 I guess. Once you hit about 30 there's no real need to do the missions for exp unless you need a break.

At 50, you can make 100k an hour just grinding in Ilum if you feel the need. Although the only need for cash is raid repairs and even that is minimal. Credits aren't as important as gold in other games.

Dear All:

My brother and I are going to start playing tomorrow and was hoping to solicit some advice from some of the more experienced players here. I think this probably applies to both simple mechanics -- i.e. choosing a good server -- as well as some any hints or tints for low-level players.

I apologize, in advance, if the request seems slightly odd; although we both regularly play rpgs, this will be the first MMO either of us has ever played so there is a great deal with which we are unfamiliar.

Thanks, for any help or advice you all might be able to provide.

Regards,

This has probably been asked about 20 times on this thread already but - do people think it's worth it so far? Have Bioware said much about their future plans for the game?

I've been considering taking the plunge but have been burned by being an early adopter in so many past MMOs (RF Online, AoC, Aion... the list goes on) so have been reluctant to dive into another as of late. I would say I was primarily a PvPer (as I was in WoW when I used to play it a long time ago), not so much of a raider and I quest alone quite a bit (just so I can play at my own pace).

If you join the AT guild on Shii-Cho, plenty of folks will be glad to give you tips (and gear help, if you need it)...

It'll be largely familiar to a Bio RPG vet, except for the need to use Quick Travel at the end of long dungeons (there's no "hidden tunnel back to surface"). Only thing is, of course, you can't pause and you can't reload.

I've been 50 and raiding for a few weeks, so my take might be different than someone who's still leveling.

The story was great while leveling my first guy, so it's worth it from that perspective.

Problem with the game comes at 50. There's not a heck of a lot to do. You can pvp, which is fun for a bit, but gets old kind of fast. I think they need to expand objectives or match types. I've pvped a lot in this game. In fact, pvping to get all my champ gear, which was a bit too quick, was how I got "raid ready" fast. The gear is pretty decent for pve as well.

If you don't plan to raid, you'll just be pvping or chatting. There's nothing else post 50 really. And if you do plan to raid, don't expect too much. We clear normal mode stuff in one night and would love to clear hard mode, but the game is too buggy. It should be fixed in 1.1, but we'll see.

Crafting is pointless post 50 for the most part (biochem aside, but it's getting a nerf). Dailies doesn't give you much since the items are close to craft items anyway.

Put it this way. I'm in a hardcore guild and "I'm so bored" is heard all the time. I kept my sub up, but most in the guild are pending.

Since I was one of the first people on my server, I quested alone 1-50 as there was usually only 1-3 people in my zones. You don't need to group to level and have fun.

Keep in mind that I had early access, so this is life after a month of a ton of play (had a couple weeks vacation where I played hard).

Main issue I see is them adding more flashpoints, but there's no real reason to do them post 50 since there's not much loot, way too much trash, way too much time to clear and pretty pointless for raiders.

Was it worth $70 (think that's what DD costs), yes. Is it worth subbing? I'll give it another month just because they are expanding Hutt Hospitality and I'd like to clear on normal/hard. But after that, not sure. There's no rep to grind, nothing fun to get, etc. Take raiding out (2 raids currently) and you have almost zip.

I'm looking forward to 50-only pvp, Ilum changes and other pvp changes they might be working on.

Been 50 for a while and still love the game as much as I did then.

I dont have the same experience as the above user.
there is tons to do..
hard modes every day for tokens.
Dailies every day for tokens.
PVP every day for tokens champion gear bags and BRAGGING RIGHTS =p

then level alts..

I agree with you and also Republic a bit too.

There is plenty to do even as a raider. Enough to keep me on for 4 or 5 hours a night? Nah but enough to have me log in an hour or two a day.

Gear is pretty easy to get and the normal mode ET/KP dont really have to high of gear standards. level 50ish gear with a piece or two of pvp was what my guild had when we cleared it. This week we've got almost all of ET (just SOA left) on hardmode done. That with more or less just a few pieces from hard FP's and what we got in normal mode ET/KP (two run throughs each).

Crafting could use some work. I dont have anything as a synthweaver i feel is worth crafting. Columi/Champions pvp are both about equal to the good stuff i can craft.

Anyone got a link to a stat guide or knows much in detail?

One thing I'm wondering is, can you focus on the armor stat for personal protection and slack the other stats? They are mostly for DPS or other things other than taking damage, yes?

Is there a soft or hard cap on the benefits of any particular stat, especially armor, that have been found?

sithwarrior.com

They have a great chart that lists the diminishing returns on the stats. And have some great discussion on how to perform your roll and your class.

And to directly answer your question, no you cannot focus on just the armor stat to tank. The primary tanking stats are Defense, Endurance, Absorption rating, Absorption percentage, and of course Armor. In addition, you still need your main stat (str, cun, aim, etc.) and accuracy to perform your tank roll otherwise you end up with greatly diminished threat. It is a very long discussion on what stats you need at what levels etc. Go to your class forums on sithwarrior and read up on the tanking spec.

Hard mode tokens = don't need if you raid. If you don't raid then yes, do them. You'll be getting gear on the slow train, but since you don't/can't raid it's better than nothing.

Dailies = don't need. You can get crafted gear improvement items that's darn close in minutes. But yes, do em if you love em or want the mount or are otherwise bored. There's nothing else to gain (no rep, etc).

PVP = yes. It's fun. Once you hit around valor 40, you could have all your champ gear. But it's random, so you could also be sitting on zip. :)

Make sure you do the pvp weekly quests (2) as you get 3 bags each.

And yeah, level alts. That's what I'm doing right now because my only "needed" playing time is raid time. Some of the stories are pretty fun.

Should point out that I enjoy SWTOR. Just mentioning things about the game as a raider after a few weeks. Raid expansion will be nice. And yes, I too can log in 1-2 hours a night and find something to do (codex entries, datacron hunting, etc). It has little payoff, but it's better than nothing.

I'd love to see crafting changes as well as some rep grinding or big ticket items to drop credits on.

I'm a bit sad over the biochem changes, but you've got to roll with the punches. I hope they keep improving this game, because I'd love to be playing it for a long time.

When is the update live? Tomorrow?

By the look of things it will not really impact me, but I do want to fire up some AA. :awe:

I'm level 25 with my TV and honestly kinda getting burned out already. The story was good at first, but now its become a little predictable along with the quests on each planet. Not much variation to my "rotation" since only a few attacks are worth the ammo to cast. The game is just starting to seem more like your typical rinse and repeat grind the more I play. Do things change much as you get to the higher levels or should I just cut my losses here.
