If you like watching actual skateboarding movies, you can get into Skate. I was a big fan of Tony Hawk, but I started getting board with it around the time Underground was released; I would take to lowering my character's stats way down to make it more realistic. Skate is different than THPS, but the people I've played it with who also like THPS all prefer Skate; it's just a better skating game overall. If the only thing that drew you to THPS was being able to grind with the American flag waving around on a board that was broken in half and on fire... well, there's nothing quite so ridiculously over-the-top in Skate.
I'd actually recommend trying out the Skate 1 demo over the Skate 2 demo; the park it gives you to mess around in is about a thousand times more entertaining. Sure, you'll be missing out on some movies, but the Skate 2 demo just frustrated me with how limited it was; there was no room to bust out all these cool tricks that had been added to my arsenal.
I intend to play more Skate 2 tonight; I'm honestly a little underwhelmed so far, but I think it's because I'm trying to adjust to not knowing all the terrain and the layout of the city the way I did in Skate 1. Figuring out where the hot skating parks are is fine and dandy, but it can seem circuitous, especially if you get lost in the heavily policed downtown area.
I'm assuming the Mogocorp skatepark isn't available from the get-go?
