I didn't pre-order, but I'm buying it tomorrow. After playing my brains out, I'll post impressions here. You pre-orderers can already do so. So do it.

Well, I bought it. For those complaining about a lack of quality packaging in games like Half-Life 2, Guild Wars outdoes itself. A real CD case, a handy-dandy quick reference card, and a manual the likes of which I haven't seen since the days of StarCraft.

Plus it starts quick and has a nice interface. I'm impressed by the amount of polish on this game.

Well, UT2K4 had a pretty anemic package. And the last five games I "bought" came in paper sleeves with my soundcard. Plus everybody whined that there wasn't a huge manual in the retail Half-Life 2 packages.

Perhaps my standards are low, but I was impressed at the attention to detail, even if I don't think it's necessary.

People whined because there was no manual with HL2, among other (bad)surprises people got with it.

I just picked up the game. 40 bucks at Fry's and I got a free poster, mouse pad, and shirt. Anyone up for an AT guild?

I've had the poster and shirt since last fall, but I'm still deciding on whether to get the game.

Well at 6:30 or so I'm going to embark on a gaming quest of epic proportions. When I recover (wake up), I'll post some impressions.

It was a FPS what you need a manual for?

Edit: and guild wars impressions?

From what I've seen, you select a region and it places you in a random Precinct (I think I saw 10-20 of these in the beta weekend). Precincts seem to be servers in that they each have a unique instance of a town (they're only for towns -- I'll talk about the between areas in a minute), except that you can still talk to people on other precincts and you can choose your precinct via a drop-down menu (which makes meeting up with friends a little awkward).

In between, your party has it's own instance of an area. You can still chat with everybody who's online, but you can't see them. Basically, everything except towns are unique instances; the campaign is really built for cooperation. If a party member enters an instance while your party is in town, everybody gets pulled to the instance (which could be annoying with the wrong people in your party).

EDIT: And by precincts, I mean districts.

No matter what anyone says, they do not do things using the standards of the genre since the very beginning of it. They do things their way, and I had no experience with their games. Not to mention I had no clue what was going on in the game, story-wise, and it acted like I was supposed to know. In the end I grew bored of trying to figure it out, and haven't played it in months. I doubt I'll ever beat it, I just have no interest in it.

So what are the "standards of the genre" you're talking about? I found it 200% intuitive.

Is anyone else getting random artifacts in the game? I was using the ATI Catalyst 5.2 drivers when I first started playing, then I upgraded to the 5.4 drivers and I'm still getting them. It's nothing major, but it's a little annoying when the artifacts start popping up once in a while. This is the only game I get them in. WoW and CS Source runs fine with both driver sets.

BTW, this is on an X800 Pro at stock speeds.

Well I agree that you shouldn't need a manual to play it.
I mean really, point and shoot, just like any other FPS, takes about 5-10 seconds to learn how to drive and use the grav gun.

I see Malak's point about the story, though I think that's more due to a complete lack of a story, rather than lack of a manual.

That said, I'm eagerly awaiting the continued reporting on Guild Wars.
If I get tired of WoW, I guess I could always pick it up :)

So the game is pretty fun.

Pros:
  • Interesting storyline.
  • Attribute points (which affect the strength of your skills) are refundable so you can experiment with applying them.
  • Energy regen is very fast. Fight some guys, use all your enery. By the time you run into some more guys, your energy is back.
  • Skill combinations start to get interesting within the first few hours of play.
  • New skills often depend on completing quests rather than level treadmilling.

Cons:
  • Party size limit is 2 until you start the campaign (VERY LAME. I had 3 friends on last night and we had to split into two different parties and do our own things for a few hours).
  • Party size limit is 4 just after you start the campaign (STILL VERY LAME. I bought the game to play with ALL of my friends, not some of them).
  • Class-specific quests. This would be fine if I was on by myself, but I'm on to play WITH my friends and we're all different class combinations. I don't want to spend 20 minutes doing my friend's quest for minimal monster XP, NO BONUS XP and NO QUEST REWARD. Yet these seem to be required to get new skills.... What the heck were they thinking?
  • Levelling takes a LONG time (compared to most single player RPGs I've played). I probabably played for five hours last night (not as epic as we had planned) and I'm only level 6.

So I enjoyed some of it. I have mixed feelings about some it. Hopefully we'll play again tonight so I can get a better feeling for the game.

everyone say this game is like diablo. i have a question, is the point of view the same with diablo or is it able to change perspective. wat i mean is 1st person view and 2nd POV.
