Ok, I read it. He has some good points, but I disagree with his premise about Indianapolis not being a football city. I very much guarantee that Indy is crazy about the Colts and Irsay's action so far has made a lot of people happy.

It's definitely a football city. Indy is my #2 team after the Brees-es, er Saints, but I do like the Colts. I used to work for a Colt's affiliate radio station in Indiana and the people there were definitely fans. Just because Indy fans might not be rabid doesn't mean they aren't committed. People in Indiana just seem a little more quiet than other places. It's not a bad thing.

I can see him refusing if Peyton is viable to play. That said, The colts are in a huge mess of what they are gonna do, because if they get Luck and they decide to keep him, unloading Manning and getting something of value in return will be an issue because they will end up eating money either way.

I don't think they're going to trade Manning. His contract is gigantic, on the order of almost 30M so Peyton essentially has a no-trade clause in his contract. They can still outright cut him but that seems like a bad PR move in Indy. There are very few teams in the league that want that type of cap hit. Palmer was a good trade for the Bengals but his cap hit is only 5M for the Raiders.

IIRC, the couple teams that might be interested in Manning are maybe the Jets, who are at the cap with dumb contracts like Sanchez for 14M+ and Holmes for 8-12M and maybe the 49ers but I don't think they have the guts to dump Smith and disturb team chemistry since he's doing "okay" right now.

Based on the public comments, I think they'll keep Manning if he's healthy and just ride him for 3-4 years until he retires. If Luck holds out like Elway/Eli, they can still trade him for like four or five #1 picks or something ridiculous since everyone is so high on Luck. I think it's a real possibility since Elway was a Stanford guy too, Oliver is smart, and Andrew seemed pissed yesterday when asked about sitting on the bench for 3 years. Short term, Luck would take a minor PR hit. Long term, no one really remembers the Chargers and Eli or the Colts and Elway.

Many people seem big on the Houston QB as well -- what's his name, Keenum? He has apparently set many records so many think he is a "great" prospect. However, I'd caution those people to look at a few other record-breaking QBs (Ty Detmer, Andre Ware, David Klinger) before annointing Keenum based on that criteria alone.

Heh, I remember Klingler, who was from Houston as well. However, Keenum does have one of the fastest releases I have seen in a long time, and is very accurate. He was impressive in their bowl game, I think it was the capitol one bowl.

I don't really follow non-SEC football. Why is everyone so big on Luck when RG3 would seem to be (to me anyway) the better athlete? Griffin seems like he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder from what I've seen of him, but what is it that Luck does so well?

Luck is a prototypical NFL pocket passer, whereas Griffin is more like Vick. Which will be better? I'm not sure, but I'd take prototypical NFL QB over another athletic QB. Most athletic QBs (Cunningham, Vick, Vince Young, Kordell Stewart, insert others) have careers ranging from disappointing to decent, but usually don't have stellar careers. Elway and Steve Young were probably the exception.

Yeah, and running QBs get injured a lot more. See Vick.

I think part of the appeal is that Stanford runs a pro-style offense rather than the college-style spread offense that RG3 is a part of. Spread offenses are great against slower college defenses but don't work as well at the pro level. Also, Andrew Luck calls plays at the line of scrimmage so everyone loves him because it reminds them of Manning.
