I still feel like the last good Need for Speed game was NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 which came out in 2002. Is this game supposed to be similar? Maybe I'll pick it up when it comes down in price a bit.
Yeah it is similar, but its fairly different as well. I agree with your sentiments (not saying some of the NFS games since haven't been ok or good in their own right, but NFS is more this style of game in my opinion).
To me, its like Burnout 3 mixed with Hot Pursuit 2, with current gen graphics, and a dash of Mario Kart and the older Need For Speed games thrown in. I actually like all of those, but the combination doesn't quite equal the sum of its parts.
The online mode would be really fun, but I'm not going to play it that way I guess. I forgot about EA's stupid online bullshit, and had planned on selling this after playing through it, so I didn't register it.
I like it, but its not as good as I hoped. The handling takes some getting used to (this, and the track layouts are the two parts that really feel like they mashed Burnout and NFS together), and I still can't get some corners right. I brake too much and lose too much speed and get passed. Strangely, I'd say it doesn't feel quite twitchy enough, but at the same time it goes from that to overly twitchy too quickly. The handbrake requires a deft touch and so I rarely use it. I think that's probably the key to getting cornering right. Its not exactly bad, but its not as enjoyable as PGR or Burnout (well 3 and Revenge, not sure about Paradise).
Oh, and don't think you'll play this like Burnout, takedowns are significantly more difficult, which is probably a good thing (Revenge was ridiculous in online play because takedowns were too easy and half the time one person would get outright screwed over).
The throwback bits to earlier NFS games are not very well done. I almost thought this was intentional, but it seems to me they tried to be serious about it and it just isn't very good.
I don't like some of the ways its like Burnout 3 in that there's a bunch of presentation stuff that you can't skip. If it wasn't for the fact that it happens after races I would think they were doing it for load times, but there's noticeable load times involved and it gets a bit annoying. The initial time you start the game up is annoying. You have to sit through the whole opening, plus watch a Shift 2 trailer.
The graphics are good and its been perfectly smooth from what I can tell, even with the full pack of racers and several cops (a couple in pursuit and several as part of the road block) onscreen at once. Er, actually its not perfectly smooth, it has those dynamic camera angles that I personally find annoying (not sure if they're able to be turned off or not, I didn't see the option to).
What it comes down to though is getting value from the online play. If you have a bunch of people on your friends list playing and regularly can get into actual games with other people, it would be worth it. If you don't, then I would say its not worth $60.
