OPEN BETA Information:

Killzone 3 Multiplayer Open Beta Coming to PSN on February 2nd

Posted by TJ Consunji // Product Marketing Manager

Hello PlayStation Nation! Killzone 3 launch is now just 30 short days away, but for those of you who just can’t stand to wait any longer, we’ve got some good news: The Killzone 3 Multiplayer Open Beta will be available for download on the PlayStation Network on Wednesday, February 2nd.
This Open Beta will be available for free to all North American PS3 users and will run from Feb 2nd-14th, giving you the perfect chance to get hands-on with Killzone 3′s brutal online warfare and try out the revamped precision controls. You will also have the option to play using the PlayStation Move and stereoscopic 3D.
The Open Beta will offers exclusive early access to the MP05 ‘Frozen Dam’ multiplayer level from Killzone 3, including all three online multiplayer modes: Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations, along with the offline multiplayer mode, Botzone.
“Frozen Dam” is a sprawling asymmetrical map set in an old dam facility, the playing field in MP05 has been carefully tailored to fit each of the multiplayer modes. Here are the four multiplayer modes included with the Open Beta:

Guerrilla Warfare (16 players)
Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out. In this mode, only the downstream monitor houses and repair bay are accessible, giving the map a very frantic pace.
Warzone (24 players)
If you’ve played Killzone 2, you may already be familiar with Warzone. It’s a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. In this mode, the power house and penstocks directly under the dam are accessible as well, so there’s more room to come up with different strategies and approaches to your goal.
Operations (16 players)
Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3′s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions, in which the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility.
Botzone (one player and up to 15 bots)
Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents.
And of course, the open beta is just a taste of what you’ll get in Killzone 3′s multiplayer experience. For more details on Killzone 3′s multiplayer maps, check out the full briefing on Killzone.com.
We’ll unveil more details on the Killzone 3 Multiplayer Open Beta soon (along with some other surprises). So stay tuned!

Meh I thought 2 sucked but I liked the atmosphere. I'll try the demo or rent it.

I enjoyed KZ2 both in campaign and in it's unique spin on multiplayer despite the control controversy. Not overly hyped for this game but I'll definitely play it at some point.

If Rico doesn't die in this game I'll be very disappointed.

How has the beta been? have the controls been fixed? I am plus subscriber but got hosed on the beta invite.

What was the deal with the controls in KZ2? Thinking about picking it up in anticipation of KZ3...

I'm not sure I can even accurately describe it because it's not something that ever bothered me.

I believe the issue mainly had to do with the speed and acceleration in which the camera would move around in response to the player's input. I think Guerrilla Games set out to give it a realistic feel when a lot of people just wanted the lightning fast reflexes that they were used to from other FPS games.

I'm pretty sure they released a patch later on so that you could change them to be more responsive if you wanted, but this was after I had stopped playing.

I got into the beta before they opened it to plus subscribers. I haven't had a chance to play for more than a couple hours, but the controls are definitely tighter while still maintaining a weighty feel/look to the game. I'd say it works well.

The Killzone 2 campaign sucked. I'll say that straight out. It looked amazing, sure. It played well. The story sucked. As well as the dialogue and stuff - seemed very stale. I enjoyed playing it through once, and killing the Helghast in different ways to see their animations and such, but it really was sub-par, and someone buying the game just for it would be disappointed IMO.

The multiplayer was possibly the best I've every played besides Ratchet and Clank MP however. The class system was great, as was the leveling (once they added in the 100k mark or whatever). I absolutely loved the guns, for instance giving the engineer a bad ass shotgun, something that other games fail MISERABLY at usually (namely Resistance 2). The abilities for all characters were good and balanced, and being able to switch them between characters made for some fun combinations (such as mixing C4 and a bot, or boost with a shotgun). The clan system, while flawed in ways that shot cheaters up to the top quickly, was also very well put together. I was in a clan formed specifically for that game (formerly Sons of Helghan), and we did awesome while it lasted. We were real good, and playing other teams that were good and being able to look at the leaderboards was fun as well. You could challenge the worst team or the best team, and you could see how much valor you had, etc. It was just an awesome experience for me, and I have 250 or so hours logged onto just the MP portion, and am still pretty highly ranked for how long I've put the game down (top 15k or so last time I checked I believe, highest was 3k I think).

I'm excited for Killzone 3, but a bit unexcited about the whole Mech thing, as I've been told it is a mad rush for those, and they are crap (as in ruin the game). We'll see, but as long as they give me a shotgun, I'll be playing the MP a lot.

They are not MW2's, that's what people have always bitched about. They are just a matter of getting used to.

They're terrible and not at all realistic compared to handling a rifle or a pistol in real life.

'Weighty feel', rofl. Go to a gun range and ask someone to let you pick up their AR-15 or something before you continue spouting utter garbage and pretending KZ2 was ever "realistic".

Who ever said it was realistic? It was more tactical, a hell lot more tactical than any CoD game.

At this point, I'm just going to walk away from this because no argument I could ever construct would encapsulize why this game is so wrong in so many ways. The fanboys continue to love its plainly awful controls (I own KZ2 for the record) despite the fact that weighty is not something real firearms exhibit.

Sure, my bolt action rifle is 'weighty' but it's also got a giant 26" barrel on it but I still have no problem putting its 17lbs on multiple targets rapidly, unlike this game where your character doesn't respond and then finally responds by overcorrecting.

Get over yourself, the controls blow. Tactical is in the eye of the beholder and not being able to accurately aim does not suddenly make a game 'tactical' to me.

Yeah that's the way I felt. Anyone that says it is more realistic has clearly never actually used an m-16 or anything similar.

I'll probably rent KZ3, I enjoyed KZ2 as it introduced some innovative features but overall it wasn't anything great. The controls were complete shit and made the game less fun.

btw if you guys didn't already notice, RavenSeal is a blatant PS3 fanboy and incessant whiner.

I played the game and the controls were fine...again, the only reason people dislike them was because "They are not call of duty like :':)'("

I got used to them, so i personally had no issues.

Also, thread updated.

You mean because "They are not like any other FPS shooter ever made". It was a gimmicky and not well done. It took away from the game and made aiming and turning seem choppy/laggy. Of course we all got used to it but that doesn't mean we liked it and trust me, LOTS of players don't like it.

The rest of the game was decent with lots of potential. The single player was sub-par though.

there was OBVIOUSLY a problem with the controls if the devs patched the controls to allow 2 different types of controls, AND made the new controls the default one...

anyone who thinks otherwise is just a fanboy.

OH WAIT!!!

Since I wasn't a CoD player when I got KZ2, my unbiased opinion matters. There was nothing wrong with the controls. The patch was for the whiners used to another game, there was no standard control scheme at the time. CoD's popularity pushes for it, but some games in the past have had half a dozen control schemes to try and please everyone.

KZ3 may make me get PS move. I'm going to rent it first. I liked KZ2 but ditched it for MW2 because KZ2 feels slow as hell after playing CoD.

It seems as if most of you forget the main problem with the controls. I don't really remember much whining about it not being like a CoD scheme, it was all about the slight lag between button presses and what happened on screen. The lag was slight but very much noticeable to where it hampered the game quite a bit for a lot of people (including me). Compared to other shooters (yes, that includes CoD), the lag was unnacceptable, especially so when the Killzone devs came up with the bullshit that it was intended (which they quietly recanted when patching in better controls later).

All I know is, I just got my tax returns done and am picking up a PS3 on Monday. I will buy Killzone 3. I played KZ2 and didn't mind the controls. It is what it is.
