Official IDE Shutdown Patch now available from Microsoft!! (IBM 75GXP fix)

Remember that LONG thread about problems with shutting down Win98 PC's with fast processors, and fast large cache hard drives? Microsoft now has the official patch on the Windows update site.

Nope. I would like to know if there is a link to that particular file. Not just the site. I'm @ work on a Win2K rig and that shutdown patch is nowhere to be found. Please help old fart...

Win2k has never been affected by this bug.

Win2k has always checked that the hard drives have committed all data in their cache before shutting down. In fact, if you watch a Win2k computer shutdown you will notice the HD shut down about a second before the computer powers off.

oldfart:
I believe your link is a fix for an old issue about win98se hanging during shutdown or it restarts when shutdown is selected.

The description reads:

<< The Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement addresses shutdown issues on systems with specific hardware/software configurations running Windows 98 Second Edition. These issues include systems restarting when selecting shutdown and systems hanging on shutdown.

NOTE: This supplement has been updated as of November, 1999. Please install this latest version

I was wondering also about this. I was assuming the November update part of it is the patch to fix the 75GXP issue. It is kind of vague. I would just use the Windows update feature to be sure you have it.

yeah this patch also is not for winME since when trying to install it will give you a message about not running the correct version of windows for the patch.

Mark R:

I just got a new computer with a IBM 75GXP. I'm thinking in running it with Win2k but i'll have WinME installed too. You said that there were no problems with Win2k, but what about WinME, is there been reported problems with it? If yes, is there a fix?

Its under 'Product Updates', 'Recommended Updates', and is called Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package.

The description is...

<< The Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache package provides a workaround to a recently identified issue with computers that have the combination of Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk drives with large caches and newer/faster processors. Computers with this combination of hardware risk losing data if the hard disk shuts down before it can preserve the data in its cache. >>

.... Yeah, this is the update we've been looking for....

More of a readme for this issue....

Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package

<< The Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package provides a workaround to a recently identified issue with computers that have the combination of Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk drives with large caches and newer/faster processors. Computers with this combination may risk losing data if the hard disk shuts down before it can preserve the data in its cache.

Modern IDE hard drives typically store disk writes in a hardware cache (temporary memory) and write the data to the hard disk later. ?Write caching? is a performance enhancement designed to increase overall write speeds.

During shutdown, data from the cache is written to the hard disk for storage until the computer is turned on again. During a typical shutdown process, any data written just before shutdown may still reside on the hard disk's hardware cache. Older processors typically execute the shutdown code slowly enough that the hard disk's cache flushed the written data to the physical media before the machine lost power. As processors have increased in speed, the shutdown time has decreased to the point that data may still be in the hardware cache when a computer is turned off, and that data may be lost. This increased processor time, coupled with the fact that hard drive caches have increased in size further increase the chance of data loss.

This is not a problem that is specific to Windows, or any given operating system, for that matter. Nor is it specific to any one brand of processor or hardware -- it is an industry-wide issue that affects a variety of vendors. The good news for Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) customers is that Microsoft offers this update until the industry can address the issue. At this point, Windows 2000 is not affected by this issue, and does not require the update.

This update introduces a slight delay in the shutdown process. The delay of two seconds allows the hard drive's onboard cache to write any data to the hard drive.

Note Because the Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package updates your system files and requires you to restart your computer after installation, please save and close all open documents and close all programs before installing the update.

Right after the discription of the update. The underlined text Read this first. Same as all the rest.

Is there a way to just download the fix without installing it? The patch automatically installs itself after being downloaded from Microsoft Windows update website.

For Win2k, go into desktop properties\screensaver, and in power, check APM. That will get your system to shut down when you tell it to. 🙂

I am not seeing it on my machine. Using Win98 first edition. Perhaps because some were saying it didn't happen to FE and Microsoft seems to believe it to be the case as well?
