***OFFICIAL*** "How to make your desktop look like those in the Friday Desktop Threads" thread

Everytime I read the Friday Desktop threads, I can never get an explanation as to how people make their desktops look the way they do. So I am creating this thread in hopes that someone with knowledge will be able to enlighten the uninformed (aka me).

The people with those desktops have no life. OTOH, I've seen plenty of explanations in the desktop threads of how they did it.

Good luck in your search for the perfect desktop. The Force is with you, Little Grasshopper!😀

Programs like windowblinds and styleXP are used for the themes, samurize and coolmon are common stats programs (samurize is the cool graphical one). y'z dock is the standard docking utility, and icons are found all over... a good site is jonmega.com

You can buy windowblinds, or another program to enable the themes to work, or you can search google for UXTHEME SP1 Patched and follow the instructions on how to remove the Microsoft locked theme dll.

Once you have installed one of those programs you can download themes from many of the sites to make your desktop non-standard but still non-unique. In the desktop threads they often link to other programs for which they use to show system stats, weather, etc on the desktop. I'm not quite that involved in my desktop (Not since the OS/2 days anyway). I currently use uxtheme patch and the focus theme available for download @ ThemeXP.org

I like the many OSX Themes as well. But I've recently stuck with the focus theme, I like the simpleness of it and the fact that the colors change when you mouseover some things.

I haven't posted in a friday desktop thread in a little while because my desktop rarely changes (once I get the functionality I want, I tend to keep it that way because I hate relearning how to use things). I seem to be an exception as I run Litestep as an alternate shell to Explorer. You can find more info at litestep.net, shellfront.org, joeblade.com (down at the moment), and an installer here. The only external program I use in my desktop customization is SysMeter. Stats are done through a Litestep module and functionality through scripting and other Litestep modules.

lmao. linux/windows OS desktops pimping mac OS != cool. 😉

I still don't understand why almost everyone here mindlessly bashes anything having to do with Macs, while at the same time go out of their way to make Windows XP look and act like Mac OS X. It just makes no sense.

Most people bash Mac hardware, not OSX.
