nitely usually...I use sounds to notify me of incoming things...I can ignore them when I don't care....at night there is always some idiot that keeps re-IMing or emailing me.

I used to leave it on 24/7, but after moving, I turn it off everynight, or if I'm going out for an extended period of time. It does serve as a heater during the wintertime, but it doesn't really get that cold here in Cali.

I read somewhere that even if some of your electronic stuff are turned off, as long as they're plugged in, they might still be drawing minimal power from the mains, so you might want to switch off your surge protector as well -- that's if you really want to save on electricity 🙂

Every night. I see no need to waste electricity while I sleep.
It's not necessarily a waste...

I'm not ever "done" using the computer. I almost always have a dozen things open that I'm doing.

Right now, I have 4 lines of taskbar open. I know basically where everything is.. If I need to come back to something, I can just alt-tab to it.

Rebooting is like a huge disruption. I have to re-open references or webpages, etc..

It would be like putting all the setup jigs and tooling for an project away each night when you went home, and then re-setting it up in the morning. A waste of time unless absolutely necessary.

anyone know how much electricity a "normal" coputer consumes??

there is no normal...

plenty of links if you search and then enter your data.
For a bit of reference, my computer:

Mobile XP/2600+ @ 2.4GHz @ 1.65v
768mb ram
AIW Radeon 7xxx
120gb Seagate
80gb Hitachi
60gb Maxtor
20gb WD
17gb WD

uses 132W while idle (1-2% CPU usage) and 168W while going full tilt(100% CPU, Prime95 large-fft.)

Oh, and mine is:
System Up Time: 2 Days, 0 Hours, 9 Minutes, 54 Seconds

My PC is normally on during the night though (I run Apache, that's when the system is defragged, among other things).
