Latest Update: 5/7 - Invasion mode was just added to the beta test.

Hey, the Halo: Reach beta is just around the corner and a ton of info has been coming out but we don't have a thread. So, here's one now that we can use for the Beta and when the game launches.

We are a little less than a month from the launch of the Halo: Reach beta and some may have been wondering about the maps that would be available during the beta. Not to worry as Bungie sat down with the gents over at IGN to talk in depth about the maps. If you don't have time to sit through the five page piece, hang out here for a second for a quick summary.

Bungie selected four maps for the Halo: Reach beta and all four were chosen for specific testing purposes. First up is the Powerhouse map which is meant to test the four vs four Slayer gametype. It's set in a "cool nice, breezy outdoor space" with a mix of indoor and outdoor player.
Boneyard is possibly the biggest map Bungie has done yet and is meant to test the six vs six Invasion gametype. If you guessed that the setting of Boneyard would be a junkyard type of setting you would be correct as Bungie says that it's a map full of derelict space frigates that are being cut up for parts.

Overlook was pulled from the game's main campaign and is being used to test the Generator Defense gametype. It's an asymetrical map similar to High Ground from Halo 3 where the Elite attackers have to go uphill to attack the Spartan defended base. Bunge had to change the map up to give it a better flow for multiplayer by opening up new routes and closing off others.

Finally, Swordbase is set on a small asymetrical map that features "man cannons" that made their debut in Halo 3. It is best suited for the Slayer, Headhunter, and Stockpile gametypes and obviously features the Covenant energy sword.

Head over to IGN to read the full details of the Halo: Reach beta maps from the interview. And remember, the Halo: Reach beta launches on May 3rd and you'll need a copy of Halo 3: ODST to get in.

haha wow nm, thought your topic said '4/9 maps revealed'

🙁

You fargin icehole. You had me go through all five pages of that IGN article searching for 'nine', '9', '5', and 'five.'

😀

I've never been a huge Halo fan but I'm getting more and more excited about this game (at first my interest was zero). I've only ever played Halo 3 and just recently picked up ODST (haven't touched it yet). I'm looking forward to trying the beta.

Best part of ODST is firefight. Just a shame that they didn't have the time to include proper matchmaking for it.

just want to put this out there...

halo 2 > *

still am surprised they are canning online play of that game next week. probably my favorite console FPS of all time. definitely better than anything this gen.

No choice if Microsoft wants to expand and improve Xbox Live apparently. The Original Xbox Live games were keeping them from adding some features.

Looks like they have made a bunch of changes to the multi player. I am looking forward to giving the beta a try.

think my favorite thing i noticed in that video is that you can now run! finally!

it also seems like there aren't random weapons spawning all over the map other than maybe the power weapons, and that you just choose which starting weapon you have, which seems like it could work too.

not sure how i feel about the whole 'pick your powerup' thing. i really hate invisibility in general in the halo world in multiplayer, and being able to just pick that from the beginning kind of bugs me. but yea i'll see once it is actually in use before i make my final decision.

one thing i don't like is the assassinations from behind. the animation takes too long. i prefer the melee to the back of the head and thats it.

are you sure you don't have the option for the quick melee kill? I'm pretty sure that would be a must.

After Halo 3, I was pretty burned out on this franchise. Even with updated graphics/guns/whatnot, it felt like I had been playing the same game for three generations of a game. That has its high points, but it felt old to me. So, I swore off Halo, stopped playing Halo 3, and didn't bother with ODST.

And then, this shows up.

Once again, I'm excited to play Halo. I'm a sucker for in-game credit systems, so that looks pretty sweet. And armor abilities??? Awesome. I'm going to miss my BR, but the DMR looks pretty impressive. This game looks like it could bring back other burned-out people back to the series. Hopefully Bungie delivers.

nah no clue, but i don't see why they would allow you to do both, unless there was some kind of benefit to the assasination, which there certainly could be. it was just from my observations in this video.
