Official Gingerbread update for Galaxy S now live

my point is that Sasmung DOES NOT release updates for US phones. Look at your evidence for the contrary. They released Fascinate Froyo source code...when? And when do you think they got Froyo from Google?

The Captivate has been on 2.2 for a while now and I'm pretty sure the Mesmerize, Vibrant, and Epic also got updates.

3-25-11, 1-21-11 and 2-21-11 respectively. Froyo was released mid 2010. Hell the myTouch 3G had it before any of the US Galaxy S phones.

Blame whatever you want but those are the facts. If you think it takes 8 months to remove a tethering app, install a couple apk's and customize the apn's you are nuts.

AT&T is rumored to have gotten the Captivate update in November of 2010, any delay after that point is 100% their fault. The same thing happened with the Dell Streak, Dell started shipping unlocked Streaks with 2.2 months before the AT&T version got an update.

Only so much of the blame can be put on Samsung when the carriers are so determined to delay updates.

You just have no understanding of what's going on, do you rudeguy? The carriers ARE to blame here. THEY had the front camera removed. THEY add extra apps that make the updates take longer to be released.

The carriers ask to have a version of the phone released without the front facing camera because they don't want it to be used for video chat on their network. They don't want the extra bandwidth being used up. It is not Samsung's choice to release the US version of the Galaxy S without the camera; the carriers just would not buy a version with it.

You honestly think that Samsung puts bing on Verizon phones and takes the tethering app off? You're a fucking idiot. It is 100% Verizon that is doing this. Samsung gives them the source code for the version that they are on (see the thread where they released the FASCINATE FROYO SOURCE CODE TO THE PUBLIC because VERIZON was taking too long. They didn't just release it for the hell of it; they released their version of the Froyo source code because Verizon is taking too long to release it for the Fascinate. If you can't understand that, I give up on you. You are either too wrapped up in how much you hate Samsung, or you're just too much of an idiot to realize what's going on here. Either way, lost cause.

with new android phones coming out the carriers want to sell the new one at a nice profit and release updates for the older ones later. just the way it is. any change of software the carriers have to certify it to run on their network before releasing it. they just won't certify it in time

We got a treat couple months ago with cm7, although it is a battery hog, i'll probably flash the new gingerbread anyway.

Poor Samsung can’t get an Android update off without stopping and starting its rollout to devices on top of seemingly endless delays. Such is the case with the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread currently rolling out to European Galaxy S handsets. The files for the upgrade have been pulled from Kies at the behest of Google, according to Vodafone. Vodafone also states the problems in question are not universal and in fact don’t even affect their Galaxy S devices.

Still, anyone who didn’t grab the update while they could must return to the waiting game and hope that Google and Samsung can sort out whatever issues they are having with getting the latest version of Android onto Galaxy phones.

6 months later, Verizon will start rolling out the Froyo update finally, and 8 months later some other US carriers roll out the GB update. Then they will halt it just like this one did... So not only do the US carriers get a delayed update, they also go through the same hiccup.

New build up on Kies. Looks official. There should be a couple of unofficial Captivate ROMs based on it over the weekend.
