Yes, a buddy of mine loves old-school tactical shooters (original style Rainbow Six stuff), and he pre-ordered and got four beta keys and gave one to me.
My thoughts in no particular order:
- Net code is broken. Party members get dropped, games lag out left and right, hell, it's even crashed my Xbox (locked the system, no response even to pushing the Xbox button). But this is a beta, and that's why they do them, I suppose.
- Graphics won't win any awards. Much simpler character models, environments. No crazy HDR bloom effects or what have you. Gives the game a very "clean" and sharp look, but definitely doesn't hold up when compared to the Frostbite engine, for example.
- Frame-rate is okay. Seems to be going for 30-fps, but I noticed a few drops during heavier firefights. Definitely doesn't feel as fast or smooth as Reach or Gears 3, but probably on par with BF3.
- Lots of sound bugs. Again, beta.
- Dislike the three depths of aiming. You can free aim with the right analog stick, firing from the hip. You can pull the left trigger for a tighter sight picture, a la Gears of War 3. And then you can push the right analog stick IN for iron sights. It's redundant. There's almost NO reason to use the left trigger since iron sights are magnitudes more accurate, so why iron sights weren't tied to the left trigger is beyond me.
- Love the "Gunsmith" weapon customization system. Making testing new attachments fast and easy, and it just looks cool.
- Love the team focus, even more so than BF3. It's damn impossible to lone wolf and win objective modes. Engineers with UAVs spotting enemies for Riflemen with ACRs compounds your team's deadliness.
- No one seems to get that it's a team/objective game. Randoms just want to TDM it. No fun without your own party.
- Needs less "wub wub" dub step crap.
- Incendiary ammo is cool.
Overall, wasn't really on my radar, but after playing the beta, I am excited for the final product. The beta has its fair share of crippling bugs, but the raw concept is cool. It hasn't be COD-ified, at least on the MP side, so it's a refreshing change.
