Here it is - the continuation of the "Free After Rebate Office Depot External Modem" thread begun by Allisolm in the "Hot Deals" section.

Continuing discussion about the OD-EMS-100 External Serial Modem:

I'll add primo information and links in this post with attribution as they accumulate.

Have at it.

Important Info:

Proper web site for support of Accent modems: http://accent.dlink.com . 1st reported by zepper

Tech Support Phone Number: 877-453-5465 Current menu options: 3-5-3 - From the Accent web site. 1st reported by zepper.

The box includes both a phone cord and a universal serial data cable contrary to what OD says on their web site. 1st reported by: gibster

It is a Data/Fax/Voice/Speakerphone modem!!! And it has jacks on it for dedicated mic and speaker or you can run it thru your sound card as most will probably do. 1st reported by zepper

It is based on the Conexant CX-06827-11 chip with the CX20442 Voice Codec support chip. 1st reported by: Wild Dreamer/zepper.

Use SHSMOD to speed up computer <> modem communication link. Up to 920kb/sec on some Winbond chips! 1st reported by zepper.

I've found out that a good set of additional commands for my purposes is:

M0;+MS=V92,1;S11=65;W2

You enter this in the field on the Advanced tab of your Modem Properties. You can get to that field thru Control Panel > Phone/Modems OR Device Manager > click on + next to Modems > rt. click on the modem name > click on Properties - both are the same from this point.

M0 - turns the modem speaker off - as far as I can tell there are no loudness (IOW, using L1, L2 and L3 doesn't seem to make any diff.) steps and since mine is too loud, I turned it off.
+MS=V92,1 - sets the preferred connection mode to V92 if available and the ,1 lets the modem negotiate another standard if V92 isn't available - put a 0 in there if you want to allow ONLY V92 connections.
S11=65 speeds up the dialing a bit.
W2 makes the modem report the modem to modem data rate (DCE) rather than your modem to your computer data rate (DTE).
And I use the ; as a delimiter between commands - see the modem's .INF file. It's the way they do it in there. It isn't supposed to be necessary but I find it makes a difference between complex commands such as the S= or +MS= commands so I've started using between every command.

And command order sometimes makes a diff. The above order works for me, other orders may not. 1st posted by zepper.

It's not really a limitation (as 56kbits/sec is about one half of the serial port speed of 115.2kbits/sec - be sure to go into DevMgr>Ports>Com?(the one you have the modem connected to)>set for 115,200 or higher and see what happens) but if you have the right kind of port on your mobo, you can use SHSMOD to crank up the port's bit rate to over 200k which can make things seem a bit crisper (even if it's only in your mind).

I have been unable to locate an AT Command Reference for this modem, but I did find out the proper site to go to for what info there is on these modems, (accent.dlink.com) which isn't much. So I have their CSRs running around hunting one up for me - I'm sure that is about as kind as sending a naive nurse-trainee off looking for a sterile fallopian tube... Tsk, tsk that's downright mean.! :D .

p.s. I'm going to see if one of the moderators will move part of this into a new thread in an appropriate section as this doens't need to be continued any longer here. As soon as we "Get 'er done", I'll add one last note with a link to it. Come on along until we have these babies humming. bh.

I'm still checking back here from time to time. Would like to know anything more you discover about these modems. Mine is still working fine.

Even though I have yet to see a copy of the AT Command Reference for this modem, I'm using commands here that have worked on other external serial modems based on the same chipset. I tested this init string in HyperTerminal and got the OK response - so I'm assuming it works. I've gotten at least one 49k connection, many 48k connections and 46.6k most frequently so the string seems valid. Not too bad considering my nearest PoP is at least 10 miles away.
