*OFFICIAL FARCRY REVIEW THREAD* (If you've beaten the game, get in here!)

Lifer
Ok, I'll start this thread with my own review. I just finished the game about 15 mins ago so it's still fresh in my mind. Here we go:

My system specs:
MSI K7N
2800XP
Radeon 9700 PRO
1GB Kingston PC2700
120GB Maxtor 7200 RPM (8MB cache)

GRAPHICS:
This is the pioneer of the next generation of FPS. I'm so glad to have a game that actually taking advantage of my system to its full capacity and doesnt cripple it. Kudos to Crytek for some efficient and smart programming. I ran the game at 1280x1024 with most setting on high except shadows and it was silky-smooth. I prefer smooth frame rates as opposed to studdering (like most people), and there was no problem with that. The first couple I levels I kept getting killed because I got caught looking at the incredible worldy stuff instead of fighting. Amazing! Utterly amazing! After being feed shaky-cam footage, trailers, and constant pushbacks of the much anticipated HL2 and Doom3, we as gamers deserve this game. I hope Valvue and id are checking this game out and understanding why its a success. I have high hopes for HL2 and D3....very high....especially after playing this game. They have no excuse, and I couldnt help but think of them a times when playing.

A.I.
I recall on several occasions being blown away (litterally) by the AI due to the tricky regrouping and grenade tossing to flush me out. One situation comes to mind, when I was crawling though a ventalation shaft past a couple rooms, and cracking open the vent to take out some goons. I took some shots (w/ silencer) and only crippled one of them. I quickly ducked back so as not to be spotted. I peeked back out and they were hiding behind the corner waiting for me to come out. I threw a grenade and nothing. Ah, I thought, they backed off farther than I had anticiapted. I decided to bum-rush them! I ran out guns blazing around the corner, and to my surprise there was no one there. I backtracked even farther trying to spot them and I could hear them yelling to one another issuing commands. turned out one of the was guarding the entrance of the ventalation shaft I in earlier and was going to sneak up on me. I killed of the one guarding, and threw a grenade into the shaft killing the other one. Wow....thats what I'm talking about. They actually figured out where I was, and decided to sneak up behind me while the other one guarded the opening. Brilliant. But I didnt trust this...it might have been scripted. I reran that scenario 3 times and each one played out differently.

GAMEPLAY
How about that last level, eh guys? Good lord, I was getting frustrated. I spent roughly 2 hours trying to get past the volcano level. It seemed damn near impossible, but, practice makes perfect I guess. I would like to send a shot out to Crytek from some of the imaginitive monsters they whipped up. I personally got a kick out of the leaping, gun weilding guy. The one that shot rockets just reminded me of a cyberdemon, but in a good way. I think this is one of the first games I've played where the physics didnt seem like a gimmick. It all worked.....it was melded together to form one of the best games I've ever played. It wsa none stop playing for me, and I didnt want it to end. I'm off to play some Multiplayer now.

Gripes:
- I understand the last level needs to be hard. But through out the game I kept saying to myself, wow...this game is tough....but its not cheap....it was b/c of the AI. It was great. It was a formidable opponant. Then, when I got to Volcano, I started to get frustrated at the fact that I was getting killed and had no idea what has taking me out (if it wasnt a #!@# rocket!). After 20 attempts, it began to feel cheap. I don't want to complain, but it was a bit of an annoyance.
- Shame on Crytek for wasting game time on CG sequences when running a game with a GFX engine like this. It often times just took me out of the game and felt of lesser quality than the ingame scripted cut scenes or even graphic quality. I still dont understand why this was done.
- Everytime I kept hoping into a vehicle I kept hitting the "0" key to turn on the radio (ok, this isnt a gripe....its my fault....too much BFV).
- I would have preffered the option of having a chase cam while driving some vehilces.

Honestly, one of the best games I've ever played. Not the best though....and not better than HL. I look at it like this, if Farcry didnt have the GFX that it does, how amazing would it be? Well, still impressive....but not quite as impressive if you put HL in the same scenario. HL was just a better thought out game I think, and besides......HL did the scientist/experiment gone crazy 1st. 🙂

This is the Dark Horse of the year for sure, but how will it meassure up against HL2 and Doom3? Who knows...all I know is Farcry is available for play right now!

So what did you guys think of the game?

is the ai still easily tricked by rock throwing? it sounds good, but it was good in the demo....and then i notced i could shoot a guy, throw a rock, and they forgot about him. if thats fixed id consider getting this

this game is very frustrating for me but still fun. I have settings maxed out even shadows and it runs with no studders very smooth, 9800 pro AT 410/365 barton mobile @ 2.5 mHZ 1GB Ram, Raptor 74

I haven't played the demo or the full game but I'm wondering how the multiplayer is? I don't bother with games anymore unless the mplayer is fully fleshed out and fun.

what pisses me off sometimes are the guys with the rocket launchers. all it takes is two of them and you're gone. plus they can shoot them one right after another and if you're close, you have no chance. another thing is, the rockets have an unbelieveable blast radius. just when you thought it missed you, you still get injured.

sorry for the rants so dont get me wrong, this is one awesome game. well worth the money. keep'em coming.

Hrm, I havent tried that yet. Good question. I'll try this next time I fire the game up.

It took me a bit of practice, but I can now dance around the rocket-guys and kill them with just the shotgun. Also, I notice that when they hit something near you, it will shake you, turn the screen read, but do very little to no damage. I thought for the longest time that they were doing real damage. Watch for it.

You guys are better off with Battlefield, UT, CS, or Quake. FarCry was designed as a single player game. Muliti is ok but it's the same as any other game... a bunch of guys circle jumping with rocket launchers.

haha...yea, its no BFV or UT2K4...but it is fun. There is FFA DM, Team TM, and Assult. Its not horrible.....but it aint gonna win no awards for it MP either 🙂 I'm waiting for the mods.

Just got it yesterday. I learn games very slow so have got absolutly nowhere and to be honest have not had much time. But my short review is ....... I can not believe how much I enjoy it! But really is a system hog, the 9700pro and 256mb pc 3500 kingston hyper X x 2 are having a real work out. I think it is time to bite the bullet and buy more ram. I just hate to waste the kingston ram I have - as the asus p4p800 has issues with 4 sticks of this ram. :frown:

It's pretty. The glider is cool. I like the sniper rifle. The world is kind of boring. Those leapy things hurt and I thought I killed them all in quake1.

I've found the MP to be enjoyable since the patch came out. Played for 6 hours over the weekend and had a blast. They need to nurf the rocketlauncher in a future patch though, just too powerful.

wow, I think you're the only person I know who is running this game with 256MB RAM. Well, if you're thinking of upgrading, I can vouch for it....its a great upgrade. I went form 512 to 1GB and never looked back. Hell...D3 and HL2 are coming

I guess I wasn't clear. I have 256mb x 2 for 512mb. Asus states the p4p800 will not support 4 sticks so to go to 1 gig I must buy 512 x 2, but I have no use then for the kingston ram I own.

Thow it up on ebay....thats what I did.

I didn't read the thread, but was curious where I am in the game. I just met with V after she hit my face with those sexy legs 😛 (kicked me off the heli). Where am I? Am I 25% done? I really want to finish this game soon so I can concentrate on studying again 😛

I finished the game this morning and for the most part loved every minute of it and was disappointed when it was over. I was very impressed with the graphics and the AI of the bots. You really had to worry about the bots nailing you every time. Also you had to worry about them doubling back on you. Very cool. I am looking forward to Doom III and HL2 if they ever come out.

bump for my question 😛

It does lack the depth of gameplay of games like battlefield and titles of the Tom Clancy series (like Raven shield), but the graphic engine has opened up so many paths. Can you imagine a Rainbow 6 game with this graphic engine?? Holy hell! I'm not down playing Far Cry's gameplay though. But other games have the edge so far in terms of gameplay features. But the mechanics of Far Cry just out ranks others. It's pretty much a great shoot em up game, which is good enough for a shooter.

This will open up so many game developers mind's in what they can bring to the table for the gamer or end user.

That's why I think this game is one of the greats. Because it opened up the gates and eyes of tomorrow. Something Half Life 2 should of done last fall but will repeatedly do this upcoming year.

5 out of 5 for me!

Edit:
