Holy shit, the world is about to end... for real.

In a series of emails with the Dallas Business Journal, 3D Realms' President Scott Miller confirmed all sorts of news about the Duke Nukem franchise of games. (We wish that anything "confirmed" about Duke Nukem didn't just make us giggle at this point.)

First and foremost, the elusive Duke Nukem Forever is slated for a late 2008 release. As for platforms, Miller explains:

We haven't formally announced any platforms for DNF...But, of course hitting the big three makes the most sense (PC, PS3, 360).

As for rumors of an XBLA version of Duke Nukem classic, those are now looking pretty legit.

The details are light, but the XBLA version will feature everything you'd expect, including online multiplayer, co-op (unspecified if that is online or not), and your typical scoreboards and achievements. 3D Realms is negotiating with Microsoft to get a release window of "sometime this year" on this title as well.

But this XBLA download makes me wonder?I've always considered LIVE's retro titles to be designed for "glory days" gamers who were looking to recapture magic of years gone by. How many of our younger readers use the service to download games that they never originally played, like Tapper or Doom? How many of you will download the original Duke Nukem if you like the new version?

"Duke Nukem Forever confirmed for 2008," heralds an unlikely source in Dallas Business Journal. What the modest, Texas newspaper actually seems to suggest is that 3D Realms is "on target" to release the mythical sequel sometime this year, though company president Scott Miller adds, "we may miss the mark by a month or two" (wink, wink). Miller also hinted that "hitting the big three" (in this case, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) is the obvious development strategy, but he continued to stress that 3D Realms has not "formally announced any platforms for DNF."

3D Realms informed Shacknews that any suggestion by Dallas Business Journal that DNF's release date and platforms have been confirmed is erroneous. Expect an official statement from 3D Realms later today.

We should also note that Dallas Business Journal seemingly confirms ongoing rumor that Duke Nukem 3D is bound for Xbox Live Arcade and will include online multiplayer and co-op support. "We're really excited about bringing classic Duke to the 360," Miller allegedly told the paper, "We're talking to Microsoft about getting a release slot sometime this year."

this game has more hype to live up to than killzone2, mgs4, halo3, gears of war2, and gta4 ... combined.

But it seems to me like all the "hype" is just done in the form of a joke. I loved Duke 3D, I still use the mouse pad, but I'm not exactly anticipating this very much

At this point, I'm almost expecting full frontal. :)

...and for what you just said--it will never ever live up to it. That's the problem. Just because it's taken so long, doesnt mean they've been working on it all that time. They've rebooted the project so many times, it's easy to lose track of where it really started. I just hope there is some kind of book that comes out (or documentary on the SE disk) that covers all of it. :)

As for the game--the length of time it's taken to get this thing out the door hold no bearing on my expectations for it. I honestly dont think it's over all appeal is going to "wow" me like HL2 did the first time I played it. I actually just excpect it to entertain me much like the original Duke 3D did--and I'll be completely happy with that (Come on Shrink Ray!). I just hope George and his team realize that the jokes from D3D need to stay back there in the 90s and there needs to be new material that's relative to our time. Hell, the protagonist of the game is modeled after a guy who is now our Gov. here in California.

Times have changes and I hope the script has as well. I have hope and faith that it will.

No kidding. No game will EVER live up to over a decade of hype, so they might as well take a crap in a box, put some blank CDs in and call it a day.

I am far more stoked about the original Duke 3D coming to XBLA than any Forever nonsense. That ship has sailed, the 80's cliche tough guy, and the cheesy dialog, don't play anymore, but reliving the experience from the first...well a trip down memory lane is always welcome by me.
