Official Doom3 PC requirements released today!

That article is crap. I stopped reading when I got to this:

If you're upgrading, look for at least 128 MB of video memory in a card with Direct X 9.0 capability that installs into an AGP slot. Cards in the $150 to $200 range ? such as a GeForce 5900XT or a Radeon 9600XT ? will be a sweet spot

9600XT will get destroyed by Doom 3 LOL!!!!!!

I think that the term "sweet spot" means that it will run OK on that card. Like the P4 2.4 used to be the "sweet spot" for P4 chips last year. I dont think it means that that is the card to get.

How do you know that, you havent even played the game. And sure, it might be able to play at a high resolution with everything turned up, but it will play the game decently.

i guess you are privy to information that Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive - is Unaware of. 😛

You are OVER estimating Doom III's requirements. 😛

Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:
? A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
? 384 megabytes of memory.
? Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
? An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

Cards at the top of the heap ? nVidia's GeForce FX and newer 6800 series, or ATI's Radeon 9800 or newer X series ? will provide the best experience and cost the most.

What's so HARD to UNDERErstand about "sweet spot"? i.e most bang-4-buck. 😛

From the reports I've seen, Doom 3 can drop the graphics quality to keep up the speed
on older cards.

Id doesn't expect everyone who wants to run this game to automatically have to upgrade.

If the Quake 3 engine is anything to go by it'll be hard to overestimate the card you'll need for awhile. My TNT2 Ultra card met the requirements but I didn't get the full impact of the game until a couple of years later when I bought my Geforce 3. Doom 3 will probably be the same.

I guess I'll start being more specific when I make statements that seek a reaction. Maybe it's just me but I don't buy the newest most advanced game to play it on relaxed settings on a lower end graphics card. I pay to play it maxed out the way it was meant to be played. That is all.

AUG 3!!!! AT LONG LAST!!!!!!

*cocks his BFG 21,000*

OK, Where is that Cyber Demon Hoar! I'm going to shove this thing up his nostrils and clean his wind pipe out!!!!

MWAHAHAHAHAHA....

*Oh the wife is going to HATE this video game*

*rubs hands together frantically*

That article is nonsense, a newspaper article for the EMachine crowd.

Besides, everyone knows the FX5800U is the card to have for D3!

😉

radeon 8500 sufficent to run doom 3? hahha you gotta be kidding. if this is the case, i guess my radeon 9000 will tear up doom3 with 60fps.

Exactly. What's so difficult to understand? If Doom3 can't run on a low end card then WTF? Who's gonna buy it? Not all ppl swap their gpus like their shirts.
Stop being so naive to believe that you can't run a game good, unless you have a $$$cpu and gpu.

:disgust:

Lol stickybytes..... you don't know much about radeons do you? Radeon 8500 will absolutely annihilate the 9000 in any benchmark, real or synthetic. In fact, the 9000 is a crippled, beaten, battered and otherwise humiliated version of the 8500.... think of it as the 8500LESEMX. The only "plus" it has is that it's "certified" for DX9. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, but most gamers can't and won't get s 6800U. If it plays good on a 9600XT and looks better than any previous game at whatever settings are pretty playable, it's fine. The 6800 might be the real sweetspot, but sometimes and extra $100 isn't around when you need it.

If you recall, when Quake III came out, you could play it on a Voodoo2, and I did. And it was pretty frickin' fast! Getting a GF2 at the time was worthwhile, but the Carmack is not to be underestimated. If Quake2 and Quake3 were any indication, this engine will scale wonderfully.

Of course they say it will play on the slower vid cards because they want to make sales. I'll just enjoy my 6800GT OC. That is all.
