For all the inquiries about D3 and over 60FPS benches- fire up any id bench from any game they have ever had- it takes a given set of frames and renders them as fast as it can. The demo may well have been limited to 60FPS but setting timedemo 1 will remove the cap.

For some funky gaming, disable VSync and enable timedemo 1 and try playing Quake2. You can tap forward and move three rooms forward in a couple of frames.

Now tell me what happened to the frame rate cap. :D
That was the first thing i thought when I saw the benchmarks! I guess John could've uncapped it for benchmarking purposes, or maybe its gone for good. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Based on the text of the article, it sounds like it's uncapped for timedemo mode (it's not running the physics modelling, which is what's capped at 60fps, and means the real game may be more CPU-bound).

AFAIK, the game still runs physics at 60fps, and therefore is effectively capped at 60fps as well.

yup, robert duffy of id said:
"Another question I have had multiple emails about, yes the game is capped at 60fps for normal game play. For render demos, like what was used for the HARD OCP stuff, we run those at full tilt which is why you will see > 60fps. "

I wonder what sort of damage control ATI is going to come up with to counter this?

The damage control, I predict, will be HL2's benches. I have the feeling ATI cards will smack down nVidia cards in HL2. It will come down to preference: D3 or HL2. If you prefer the former, buy NVDA, but if the latter, buy ATI.

to even have to put things into such light like that......D3 is for Nvidia and H2 is for ATI...

IMO that's just stupid. Both cards are excellent and we'll ALL see what happens down the road with new drivers and optimizations made by both companies. Picking a side at this point is retarded.

too many fanbois on both sides...
