While weight may figure into it, it doesn't have to... With obstructive sleep apnea, weight often plays a major portion. But for the central type, it has little to do with weight. A person could also have obstructive and central types.
Sleep apnea is pretty common. Something like 10+ million Americans have it IIRC. Other than being overweight, the other increased risk factors include being male, "large neck", smoking, drinking, certain ethnicities and being over 40.
Some simple signs that indicate you might want to get checked:
- falling asleep while doing other things: driving(!), watching tv, etc.
- repeatedly waking up tired even after a nights sleep
- excessive snoring
- if someone tells you that you sound like you stop breathing or gasp for breath
Yes, I had sleep apnea... At first I could not stand the CPAP machine either. But it was better than not sleeping soundly. With my weight loss, my sleep apnea has disappeared completely.
