Isn't golf strange?

This guy seemed completely lost not too long ago. I really thought he was on the back side of his career trending downward fast, and when he admitted he had troublesome arthritis it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he was no longer going to be a consistent factor at the highest levels. Now it looks like he might be a major player for the foreseeable future.

It's gotta be the steroids. 😛

You mean people actually care about goff? :colbert:

Come on...admit it...you're trolling.

Have you ever tried it??, tell you what, if I brought you to the range with a bucket and showed you how to grip a 3 wood, you would probably hit 2-3 decent shots and you might be hooked, I'm not kidding..

The best way to have fun is:

1) find some cool dudes that are about your level that are really interested in playing. If that means beginner then so be it, but don't head to the course during crowded times until you get some practice.

2) Most importantly - learn to get off the tee consistently. When I first played golf I had a knack for putting and shorter iron play but I couldn't hit a wood to save my life. That led to many painful days of skulling 2 or 3 irons 100-120 yds off of the tee and frustratingly hacking towards the green.

One Summer I said "enough", and practiced hitting a driver until I figured it out. For all of those who say the short game is where it's at, great. But if you can't pound it out there 260-270 consistently golf will NEVER be as fun as it should be, trust me. Every duffer will flub chip or miss a putt, but not being able to drive is way worse.

really hope he can win a US Open and get the career grand slam. That's basically his last unfinished business.

All that is still true, even with the win. When a pro golfer gets past 40 he's living on borrowed time. They can't practice as much, their nerves start to get jangly, they're rich and pampered and fat and happy and lose the fire in their bellies. They can't perform like they did when they were 30, that happens to everybody. Phil is never again going to be a "consistent factor at the highest levels", he can't do it week in and week out. But he's a guy with a huge amount of talent who will put it all together for short stretches and for a single week he's capable of being great. This was one of those weeks.

Basically true, it killed me a few years ago when all Tom Watson had to do to win a US open was par the 18th and he overclubbed it and it hopped off the back of the green, he would have been the oldest winner of a Major if had made par. Phil just gets into a "zone" on occasion and it's light's out for the field when he does, your right, it won't happen as often as he's well over 40 but it's fun to watch when it does..
