OFFICIAL: Ben Howland to become UCLA's next men's basketball coach!

Be happy for now.

You will all be bitching in five years when he hasn't won a national championship.

I'm just looking for the team to at least:

1. Win the games it should win (no more upsets from Cal State Northridge and the like)
2. At least be competitive against highly talented and accomplished teams (no 30 to 40-pt. blowouts from Arizona and Stanford from years past)
3. I'm hoping the team would do better in the first half of the season instead of start out really slow.
4. (which will hopefully lead to) Make the NCAA tournament and do fairly well. Of course "do fairly well" most likely means "win national championship" at UCLA, but I personally just want them to at least do well and not get upset in the first round.

I hate ben howland, I go to pitt, he's a good coach don;t get me wrong, but such a ababy, he had this program on the right track, and would prob have done alot better here(at pitt) int he next sevarel years than at UCLA, he has a base here none at UCLA.

yea, I'm pretty happy with the hire. He's a solid coach, that can teach fundamentals, defense and TEAM play. too often UCLA had a bunch of guys trying to showcase for the league.

What I didn't like was the article in the Times today that JA Adande wrote about Howland being the safe choice etc. I'm fine with the safe choice. He WANTS to coach at UCLA, which goes a long way in my book. I think he's a solid get and could last here a while. He grew up in Cerritos watching UCLA play. He knows what the fans have seen in the past, so knows first hand about the tradition and 11 banners hanging in Pauley.

UCLA fans have been painted unreasonable by the media but like bruined wrote, what they want is:

1. basketball played in a structured way, a system, not playground ball
2. no bad losses
3. no slumping at the beginning of the season, then playing just well enough to get to the sweet 16 and then get blown out
4. Play consistent basketball to get a high seed in the tournament. Lavin's teams were always inconsistent, I think the highest seed under him was a 3 his first season and a 5 the others.

UCLA fans expect the program to be like Kansas,Arizona,Kentucky and Duke. Competitive every year for the Conference title, getting to the Final Four around once every 4 years. That may seem like alot, but that's what schools like Arizona, Kentucky and Duke do, year in and year out. Kansas I would include in the competitiveness, but the first time they made the final four since '88 was last year.

about time they got a real coach. i don't know what was worse, lavin's greased out do or kopono's retro YMCA headband.

I was really hoping UCLA woulda have gone with an NBA coach. But o wells.

to get an NBA coach to me is the equivalent of getting a superstar recruit, you don't really know how long he's going to stay, but it wont be for very long. Howland strikes me as the type of guy who will stay here a long time. He grew up in LA, his parents are up in Santa Barbara. He's young enough that he could stay 20 years.

how you guys think Kapono's going to do in the draft? I think the highest he's gonna go is in the late 2nd round. Has the guy lifted any weights since he got to UCLA?

i agree late to mid 2nd round...he just hasn't grown since he's gotten to UCLA. When i say grow I mean improve his game.

He's a jump shooter, great in college, but not good in the NBA. He doesn't have the handles to play 2 guard, which at 6'7" or 6'8" is what he'd be playing. He might get some time at Small forward, but he'll be looked at as a 2 guard. He showed at UCLA when he was playing point, that it was easy to trap him, and pressure him. He plays better off of the ball, coming off of screens. Which is good, but he can't create his own shot. He'd get pwned in the NBA if he tried to drive on Kobe or Tracy McGrady.
