the bottom line is, the game ran SMOOTH for me before this update. No problems, only a few random crashes here and there. Pings were usually between 15-30 ms. Not too many servers were over 100 ping. Most were under 50.

No I can't find one under 200 hardly.

I'm not hitting the page file, but I will be upgrading to 2 gb next week, so we will see.

Either way, this update screwed up an already screwed up game. Though it is incredibly fun when it works.

I'll be on vacation next week, hopefully an update will come out and fix these issues so that I can actually enjoy playing, instead of spending time trying to fix it.

The server browser is just displaying incorrect pings. If you actually join the server, (or just check it with ASE) then the actual ping is lower. After the patch, the lowest pings the server browser showed were all 93. But when I joined a server, my ping was ~40.

There will be NO widescreen support in this game according to EA. However if you have your command line with this:

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 768

It works.

yes I know all about that. The problem is that the FOV is still screwed up.

you can change the FOV, I did it on mine and it works pretty well. Changed from 1, to 1.1 in the VideoConfig file using Notepad. Looks great on my 2005FPW.

Ya i forgot to mention that, i thought it was common knowledge ;).

Again from actual comparisons of Screen shots it simply chops off the top and bottom of the image and you gain no periferal vision by doing this.

link to widescreen gaming forum.

Again? Did i miss something mentioned about that?

Its still the best way to view for my 2005fpw.

The problem is you actually see LESS than a regular 4:3 resolution like this. You get the same perfieral vision but less up and down... AKA they chop off the top and bottom off and zoom in.

I'll look into that today. HOPEFULLY you are right and that is one less problem to worry about, although still annoying.

The only other problem is the crazy lag that is present now, 40 ping or not.

Edit: On a side note, I actually notice that my login time to the account server is MUCH faster with the update, I would estimate at the very least twice as fast, probably more. At least there was one improvement for me in the patch :)

After reading a few forums, it appears that there is a memory leak problem with both the Windows and the Linux server applications.

Memory usage goes up 16KB every second until the server pukes.

According to EA, they arent going to do anything about it, so all we can do is hope.

Yeah, it's like inverse Pan & Scan. Perhaps a custom resolution of 1400x1050 could be added somehow (CP, registry, &c.), otherwise stick with 960 and only 9% will be lost from max vertical or if image quality is not crucial then allow fixed aspect ratio scaling by the panel or drivers if available.

After I installed the patch the game wouldn't boot :|. I'd click it, the little mini-screen thing saying BF2 comes up, then a couple black screens, then back to my desktop. I wanna play, haven't played since like 2 days after retail release(lag:p) but I really don't wanna re-install.

The patcher only overwrites files it recognises. If you had e.g. a noCD crack installed (check bf2.exe and core.dll), it will behave the way you describe.

The reason I know...?

I can't get the game to run under Windows 2003 Server (32-bit nor 64-bit). I then installed XP, and that allowed SafeDisc to run again. However XP fails to see all my memory (only sees about 3GB of my 4GB installed mem), so I prefer being able to run the OS I had intended to run. Hopefully someone will cough up an updated noCD patch. Grrrr. (reinstalling XP reminded me just how much I hate installing XP -- what a mess! It asks for the most insane things and all that fade-in and fade-out crap really slows down the installation process! Windows Server is simply much better in this regard)

My choppyness has been somewhat resolved by manually updating PB. My friend sent me pbweb.exe, which is apparently an exe that you put in the PB directory, run and it updates the files. I'm not sure where he got it, so if you are looking you may just want to search for pbweb or check the planetbattlefield2.com/bf2 forums.

You need to switch from the No-CD BF2.exe back to the regular BF2.exe and run the patch again.

Edit: Totally didn't see that was already answered.

The game still crashes to the desktop all the time on my system (9800pro, 2GB ram, P4 3.0c) for no apparent reason. It's a shame, since I really like the game. However, I think I will be returning it this weekend. I have better things to do than to wait for BF2 to crash after every 5 minutes of gameplay.

Yep, I experienced a crash for the first time yesterday while playing online. Thankfully though, I actually got through a session without it freezing up on me.

AMD 3500+/1GB/6800GT

... but when it works, it's so much damn fun!

Yeah, I've crashed about 4 times so far with the 1.01 patch. Never had any problems with 1.00 :(

I do have GOOD news though

1 - We have been able to see it a rack machine provided by a trusted partner.

2 - We have been able to recreate it in an EA racked machine. I have set DICE up with access to this machine. This is happening and repeatable on all versions of the servers.

3 - DICE's CEO is calling key members of the team in from vacation to fix the problem.

We wil have a timetable by noon Friday this gives DICE time to evaluate the fix.

EA has found the memory leak and are testing a patch now. This will be a server-side only patch, and you won't need to patch your clients.

I don't have an ETA on deployment, but my crystal ball is guess today or tomrrow at the latest.

So what is everyone doing in the mean time, reinstalling 1.0?

I ran into a ton of servers last night that kept kicking me because I had a different version of punkbuster.

WHAT?! Those !@#ers were on vacation?! You don't release your team to vacation right after a product release... especially when you know there are problems with it.

You don't do that until it's stable, and then you give them whatever time they need to recover.

I'm not saying they're not entitled to a vacation, but any dev team should be staffed to the gills until they know things are clear.
