Wow, that brought back memories,
The elfstones, the druid and the rest of the shannara series. Thats what originally got me into fantasy stuff like Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings.....
I loved Terry Brooks series. Is he still writing?

Terry Brooks is OK, but not the best writer I've ever read as far as fantasy goes. There's way too many good recommendations that I could make, but I'll throw out two:

George R.R. Martin: A Song of Ice and Fire series (Book 4 comes out in April :D)

Robert Jord- No, not really. :p

Sean Russell: River Into Darkness/Moontide and Magic Rise series or the Swan's War series

The Dice Man - Luke Rheinhart
Edit to add DUNE. Doh, wot a mug for not including it the first time.

Haven't seen anything lately, although I was not a big fan of some of his other books... The 2 original Shannara series were his best. Check Barnes & Noble for info...

Agreed. The original series and the "Heritage of Shannara" were definitely the best. After that, it just seemed like he was milking the Shannara world for all it was worth.

Wow, that guy is still writing Shannara books. I only read the first two series tho, and that was back in highschool around 90 or so.

1984 by George Orwell. Umm, WONDERFUL book. It's one of the few that has ever frightened me because not only can I see it being done, but we actually have the technology now to do it. Aside from the massive resource consumption detailed, the rest is perfectly feasible.

The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle. One of the most intelligent treatments of first contact between humans and aliens amongst the stars.

I would like to add a short story to the list: The Streets of Ashkelon by Harry Harrison found in Stainless Steel Visions. A grander and more poignant tragedy I have not read. Really, it's a no win situation and all you can do is watch it unfold. Kind of like a trainwreck.

Ender's game series (first one rocked, went downhill though in later books)
Hyperion series (including the Endymion books)

An interesting series, certainly. The Endymion series changed a LOT about the universe, a bit too much IMO. You can see some of the ideas he was working on in the Hyperion half and they didn't really go anywhere or where contradicted by Endymion. Plus the whole messianic mythos he worked into it wasn't the greatest.

Hyperion itself, though, was a work of art! I love how each narrative was stylistically reflective of the person telling it.

Thanks for the info, I read the Hyperion series years ago and just finished re-reading it. Just started the Endymion, it is good so far, I'll keep in mind your opinions as I read it.

Excellent novels! I love how he builds such strong characters, it makes it so much easier to get engaged in the plot when you understand the motivation behind a character's actions.
