Looks like the 3.6GHz P4 EE doesn't do too bad...... I would say performance wise, they are very close...the p4EE and the Athlon64... I guess the big question, is which one would you be really able to buy? .... The AMD of the P4EE first ?...

So a 3200 clawhammer will get me maybe 10-15 more FPS in commanche,20 more FPS in splinter cell, and 50 more FPS in UT2k1.... hmm . God damn! That just impressive as hell! But so is dropping 600 dollars! Time to do some OT.

Guys, I'm a big P4 guy, but.............

I love AMD and I'm really rooting for them for two big reasons. 1. Competition. Its good for all of us and brings lower prices (well it seemed to, until the A64 prices came out??). 2. Finally a big push towards Desktop 64-Bit computing.

But the problems that are rearing it's ugly head today, is the Tepid reviews for the A64. No one is saying 'it ain't a contenda' but the P4 EE usually beats it across the board. OTOH, the P4 EE is admittedly is a stop-gap measure just designed to spoil AMD's launch party and to hold Intel over for their minor delay with the Prescott CPU's. But the big problem with the A64 is that it will be very expensive to build a new A64 system and their is no 64-Bit desktop O/S yet. And AMD is charging a bit too much, that some folks will just buy a P4 EE.

But one thing we must all rememberis that when the original Pentium 4 came out 3 years ago (at least I think it was Fall of 2000?), is that the 'new' Pentium 4 was widely regarded as inferior to the Pentium 3 at the time and crippling in performance. So maybe for AMD, we will just have to wait until true 64-Bit consumer Applications are released to show the obvious superiority over anything that Intel could ever offer.

thatsright, Intel learned from their williecore mistake. I don't know how much they can squeeze out of 3.6 Ghz ! You could be right though, they could just very well make something x2 as fast. But if we all knew that then Intel stock would be pretty damn expensive right now.

I haven't read all the reviews, but from what I've seen its neck and neck with A64 slightly ahead of the P4-EE. The big issue seems to be availability (not price). Since these arent' available in large quantities, of course the price is going to be high.

I'm surprised how amazingly well the EE is doing. But it all comes down to price, how cheap can Intel produce those EE chips since they wont be replacing the P4 while the Athlon FX will replace the current Athlons

Probably much cheaper than AMD can produce Athlon 64s, considering they're roughly the same size, Intel has spare 0.13um capacity as they begin to transition to 0.09um, the R&D costs have long been paid off, Intel's 300mm wafers and lower costs from not using SOI.
