**OFFICIAL** Assassin's Creed thread

Who bought it? Who's played it? And why doesn't IGN have a review of it yet?

edit: oh, IGN doesn't even know the game is out yet... they say it releases tomorrow.

here's some reviews:
http://joystiq.com/2007/11/13/...box-360-playstation-3/
Games Radar (100/100): "With its riveting story, beautiful visuals and surprisingly lifelike world, Assassin's Creed is an incredibly deep, enjoyable game that kept us addicted from beginning to bizarre end. It's bogged down by a lot of monotonous repetition and a fighting system that's sure to frustrate hack-and-slash fans, but neither of those things really diminished our enjoyment of the game, and both were far outweighed by the thrill of tearing around its enormous cities and carefully planning spectacular assassinations. It might not be for everyone, but playing through Assassin's Creed still stands as one of the most outstanding gaming experiences of 2007."

Game Informer (95/100): "Assassin's Creed is the type of game that comes along only rarely ? a title that innovates in so many areas it helps to set a new bar in various aspects of gameplay, storytelling, visuals, and controls. Simultaneously, it's an imperfect game in which the small flaws that mar its sheen are all the more noticeable because so much of the rest of the game shines so brightly. Deep, engaging, and surprising from beginning to end, Assassin's Creed's merits will be debated for a long time. However, as a brave attempt at delivering something unique and audacious, it excels."

1UP (70/100): "The fault of Creed's game structure isn't what you do -- gathering intel and conducting hits is actually pretty sweet. The repetition of these actions, however, is severely bitter. I kept waiting for a changeup of the objectives, and, well, that never happened. From the first hit to the last, you go through the same motions over and over and over...find the viewpoints, do the investigation missions, and take out the final target. It got to the point where I only did the minimum amount of investigation tasks needed to perform each kill. To make things worse, despite Ubisoft's faithfulness to history, the three cities of Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem are practically the same."

Here's the scores on metacritic so far.

100 - Gamepro
100 - Games Radar
96 - Xbox Addict
95 - Game Informer
91 - Game Trailers
87 - Computer and Video Games
80 - Pro-G
70 - 1up

Consensus is that it looks beautiful and that it is very repetitive.

I dont understand how Games Radar can give it a 100/100 if they claim that the controls are frustrating and its repetitive.

lol Pretty much makes the score worthless.

Eurogamer (known to be a bit tough) gave the game a 7
TeamXbox - 7.9

IGN has a video review up but all it does is buffer to death so I can't watch it though at the beginning the guy says.."And in fact Assassins Creed is probably one of the top 5 most disappointing games of all time when you consider its potential." ouch..what a way to start a review!

Some love the game and others express a lot of disappointment though mostly because they seem to see the potential for something more grander with those huge cities.

With Mario Galaxy, Crysis and soon Mass Effect I think I'll hold off on AC until I can get it for cheap (40 bucks or less).

You mean like this Thursday at Fry's for $39.99, which is "cheap"? 😀

From what I heard on their podcast, I don't think the IGN review will be good.

As much crap I give IGN, they're usually the place I agree with most... I'm looking forward to the write up at least.

i think this game is going to be hit/miss.

the whole "twist" in the game (if you haven't heard yet) is very clear from the get go. personally i think it's lame as all hell.

the game is pretty slow paced as well. i've played it for 4 hours and only killed 1 of the 9 main targets, and I did that just at the 4 hour mark.

the tutorial alone is like 2 hours heh. there is a ton of dialog in this game (atleast at the beginning parts) and you can't skip it which bothered me.

i am a bit uncertain why i'm so drawn to this game. i'm very impatient with games and just want to play play play, but for some reason, as slow paced as this game is, I continue to play it. i think a lot of it has to do w/the setting of this game. i just love the environments in general. the graphics are phenomenal even though there is a good bit of tearing.

i definitely can see where this game can get repetitive for sure, but the cities are just so alive and the free-ness of this game just feels so cool. i mean it literally is like GTA in the 1100's time era. you can go anywhere and do anything pretty much. you don't HAVE to just do the mission straight up. i personally found myself getting all of the eagle vision points before I did any of the missions.

the control is a little advanced and takes some getting used to. i still get a little confused sometimes after 4 hours of play. also the combat is not very in depth at all, but it's still rewarding when you get a kill in basic sword fighting.

i personally would give this game around an 80 - 85 out of 100. but i definitely can see why people would not like it.

Looks like I'll be canceling my preorder and renting first. I was already skeptical because it was actually being developed by Ubi, but I was keeping my hopes up because it was the Prince of Persia team.

What is the free running like? I thought that looked like it would be one of the coolest parts. I use to just run and jump around in Mario 64 all the time and thought this would be even cooler.

it's pretty cool but honestly there isn't much to it. you basically just hold R trigger as you move, then press A if you have to jump. but it was fun running accross rooftops and stuff.

and i don't think it's much like thief at all.

I just watched the IGN video review. no score, but to summarize: they said for a game claiming to revolutionize the genre, it falls flat on its face. People will enjoy it, but its repetitive and the big twist is garbage and pointless. beautiful graphics, there is some fun for a while, but they recommend renting before spending $60 because you'll only want to play it once, and may not want to finish it the first time.

From the video review, I'm guessing they'll rate it high 7's or low 8's

honestly that sounds like a very valid opinion that i agree with.

although i did never remember hearing them claim to revolutionize the genre.

IGN Review is up: 7.7

If you play Assassin's Creed for an hour, you will probably think it's a fantastic game. But as Assassin's progresses, its dual storylines and repetitive quests begin to grow tiresome. There are so many great individual elements, but they are lost among the myriad of poor decisions from Ubisoft Montreal. Wasting the big twist on the first five minutes of gameplay is a tremendous mistake, but not nearly as damaging as the ill-conceived assassination investigation quests, which get old fast. The exploration aspects of Assassin's Creed and the combat are both plusses in my book. But those two elements are only a small part of the whole. And most everything else in Assassin's Creed is mediocre.

With the amount of top notch games that are out, a 7 isnt going to make me run out and buy the game. Too bad. 🙁 Maybe if I end up buying everything on my wishlist before the holiday, I'll ask for it, but meh... too bad.

(oh, and looks like I was spot on with my rating guess 😀!)
