UPDATED 11/03: Breaking news

PARIS - The condition of Yasser Arafat (news - web sites), in a French hospital for treatment of an unidentified ailment, has deteriorated significantly over the past day, Palestinian officials said early Thursday.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Arafat had taken a turn for the worse, adding that doctors still don't know the cause.

Mohammed Dahlan, a former Palestinian security chief in Paris with a group of Arafat aides, denied that Arafat's condition has worsened. "The president's condition is stable," he told reporters.

A Palestinian official in the Middle East confirmed an Israeli TV report that Arafat was in very serious condition.

His days look numbered.

Actually, I feel the same way.

Arafat has not been a good leader to his people. They are no better off today than they were 40 years ago, that's for sure.

He's an absolutely terrible and corrupt leader. I think he has admitted to smuggling billions of dollars in aid to himself.

Even though I am pro Palestine, I am anti-Arafat. I hope he dies painfully.

Only thing that worries me is this would create a power vaccum and severeal different groups would go for power-->leaving the PA in a fractured state; and the issue isn't that they would be fractued, as much as Isreal would try to take advantage of the situation and probably jack more and more land.

The Israelies could have killed him, but didn't. Now he'll die and it'll be because of an Israelie conspiracy. Either way, good riddance.

You must be mistaken . . . there are few real Christians posting on this board. It's questionable just how many real Christians live in this country.

Having said all that . . . Arafat sux great big donkey balls. He's almost as evil as Sharon but they are equally despicable. Now all we need is a change in leadership in Israel and the US . . . preferably by election.

Awsome. Hopefully that will start a civil war within Palestine. They'll be to busy killing each other to worry about bombing Israel.

Israel does not want more land, they want the land that they have to be safe.

Arafat has never been any influence to prevent Israel from taking land. All he every did was bitch and moan, then turn tail and run/hide.

What land Israel has beyond the initial borders was taken from the Arab states that tried to wipe them out.

UPDATED:

RAMALLAH, West Bank - Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) collapsed Wednesday night, was unconscious for about 10 minutes and remained in a "very difficult situation," Palestinian officials said. A team of Jordanian doctors was urgently summoned to treat the ailing Palestinian leader.

A Palestinian official in Arafat's office said the Palestinian leader had created a special committee of three senior officials, including Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, to run Palestinian affairs while Arafat was incapacitated.

However, other Palestinian officials, including his spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh, denied that such a committee had been formed.

Arafat was eating soup during a meeting with Qureia, his predecessor, Mahmoud Abbas, and another official between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. (2 p.m. or 3 p.m. EDT) when he vomited, according to a bodyguard who was in the compound at the time.
