Oops, I guess I shouldn't have uploaded that video of Larry Page and Sergey Brin with that goat.

I believe google has some deals with record companies
If I remember correctly they recently closed a deal with Time warner, and have moved on to announce something with sony BMG, universal and CBS. Mabey there is another one I missed, I'm not sure.

Seems like google really wants in on the next step of content delivery of really sh!tty content. They are walking right into the middle of the media conglomerate world, and they are the little guy with what the real players want. Sounds like another step in the corporate sellout.

The selling out of a popular grassroots item like youtube doesn't always go over so well. Though it is classic. You let someone else build the foundation and get the gears rolling, then you buy them out and then sell your complete sh!t content to that customer base. Boy I just can't wait to see what garbage these record companies have lined up to dish out to the world in real-time.

Same thing I was thinking. People were wondering how the youtube owners were going to turn a real profit.... I guess that question is answered.

Now if only I could figure out how google plans to turn a profit...

i think that the people in here who are saying "youtube blows" are basing their opinions on the fact that they don't like the videos on youtube, instead of what the underlying technology is...

Yup, I'm sure you know more about a sound investment than those silly multi-billionaires.

Personally, I think that Google screwed up. They should have waited for YouTube to blow through most of their VC funding due to lack of advertising and insane bandwidth costs, and then picked them up for a huge discount when things were looking grim.

But, Noooo, Google had to buy YouTube at it's peak of popularity when they were the most valuable. You would think that someone there would have paid attention and learned the lessons from Yahoo's ill-fated mergers with Geocities and Broadcast.com, or perhaps from the Time-Warner buyout of AOL.

Let's see... 1.65billion split 65 ways is 24.63 million. Hot.

Not sure how this will play out- I actually prefer Google Video, so even if youtube eventually gets merged into GV, it really won't bother me.

The only reason I see Google doing this is to stamp their name everywhere they can.
I guess the millions of computers with Google Earth, Google Toolbar, Firefox's Google Search Box, Picasa, Google Talk, (not to mention Google AdWords on every second website) etc. wasn't enough.

$1.6 Billion to reinforce the Google brand name in yet another popular web joint? I don't think it's worth it (but then, I'm not a billionaire entrepreneur). How exactly do they aim to make it profitable? (More AdWords FTL)

This only sounds like good news for the people who were going to sue YouTube - now, they can all sue Google for bigger settlements!

I really have no clue about this move, but I do find it entertaining how many people in this thread seem to think they know what is best for google.

They will probably merge the two. Which is sad because now I can't watch copy protected material on YouTube. :(

Yup and after getting rid of the free copyrighted content, they'll expect you to pay for it. *Shudder*
