I have one general worry which maybe someone will know more about. It seems to me that if I were a card maker, I'd be testing all my products prior to boxing to see which have great OC potential, and then stashing those aside to market later as factory OCs.. If that were true, it means the stock cards being sold have already kind of been picked through and the best taken out.

I've bought the vanilla EVGA cards and clocked them myself back to the 5700 series. I've never had a card that wouldn't hit OC's seen on same chip factory overclocked models. Maybe I'm lucky.

In reality, I think factory OC'd cards are 99% marketing. I've searched high and low for proof of a real manufacturer binning process. I've emailed EVGA, BFG, and Gainward and never received repsonses. I've searched the net, and I've posted here. Nothing but theory. I've yet for someone to prove me wrong, but I think there is little or no binning process used.

Am I happy to scoop up the vanilla EVGA 8800 GTS, yes! Would I consider step-up unless it's next gen, no! :)

Mine said the same... until I went to the front porch and found it waiting for me. So mine is in hand but I can't do anything with it :( The wife took it away to wrap it though she did let me open it and fondle it for a few seconds. Ah well, I have a few days off at new years and that will be the first chance I'll actually have to catch my breath and play with the card.

I have been saving Oblivion, Bioshock and Crysis to play with this card so I can't wait. Hoping to hit a modest 750 on the core, looks like this is a distinct possibility!

Bad wife! At least she let you fondle it though. :D

You've been saving Oblivion? You're gonna have a hard time dividing out your free time. You may want to blast through Bioshock and Crysis, then start Oblivion. If and when you upgrade to next gen, play Crysis again. Hope you didn't read any of the Bioshock spoilers. The game takes several interesting turns...

"Would you kindly..."

Thank goodness that I do not have to wait to fondle mine... Actually, I do because my wife invited one of her friends over and now I will have to be the good husband and spend some time socializing... uhg... That is torture when a brand new computer part is still in its shrink wrap...

Well, I did start oblivion but never finished it due to the poor performance and I have been itching to play again. I can't wait to install the texture packs and be able to play it at 1680x1050 smoothly assuming my old opteron can handle the strain.

New Years? A few years ago, around Christmas time, I was waiting for my X800XT-PE to be delivered. My Wife suggested doing the same thing....to this very day I still miss her....

Click the link for one journalist's tour of EVGA Europe's speed bin room. It looks real enough to me. There are some nice geek pr0n pictures too: piles of 8800 GTXs.

EDIT:I apologize for the OT - please continue with the fun GTS 512 OCing madness.

I have the 8800GTX, which is the more logical thing to do?

1. buy another 8800GTX to SLI ($450-500)
2. buy 2 8800GTS(512MB) to SLI ($720-800) and retire the 8800GTX
3. Or wait for the next king of the hill by nVidia?

I guess option 1 is a no-brainer because it's cheaper. But I don't know about the performance.
The GTS (512MB) has two known advantages: less power usage and built-in hardware video decoder. Option 3, for how long?

Maybe they missed a scan at the local hub. That would suck if it's delayed. Hope you get it. I just got mine. It's installed! Wow that fan is loud when you first boot PC. It's silent as it defaults though. Now to start tweaking...

Wait as long as you can.

I upgraded from 7950GT to 8800GT, to double my gaming performance/frame rates.

Do the same - wait for something twice as fast as the GTX.

Otherwise, it is just an UPDATE, not an UPGRADE.

Even in SLI you won't double your rig's performance.

Just wait...

Gratz! Can't wait to see what what numbers you get... I hope mine comes today, but at this point I will be ok if it does not come. I have waited a few months already, what is a few more? I hope I get it, but it will not ruin my weekend if I do not.

Option 1, power and heat. Option 2, large up front cost, and what to do with the GTX.

Option 3... ask yourself, what game beside Crysis is your GTX not able to handle right now? Yes there are poorly ported DX10 games that choke even on a GTX. Simply avoid them. Your single GTX will run 90-95% of games out there at very playable frame rates.

I think most people would tell you to hold off. Resist the temptation of going SLI just because you can. $375 used GTX's make it very tempting. But you really need to look at the big picture. My vote, be happy with the GTX for now..

This was my thought, if I had some 8 series then I would have waited but I know I am going to get a huge improvement vs my 7800GT so thats why I jumped.

Mine's in but I can't get rivatuner to work with 169.25. Once I find a working driver version I'll post some numbers.

Edit1. So apparently 169.25 is the only version that works with this card. Fantastic.

Edit2. Went to the rv forums and found a way around it. If you're running Rivatuner 2.06 and have problems with greyed-out or missing overclock/fan buttons, do this:

To add support for 8800gts 512 to rivatuner 2.06, open rivatuner.cfg and make the following edit to the G92 line under [GPU_10DE] : G92 = 610h-61Fh,600h

Edit3. The temps on this thing are a lot better than my 7800gtx. It tops out at 64C under load, 47C idle. By comparison, my gtx hovers around 75C under load. Fan speed is set at 60% to match the noise level of my case fans.

Edit4. First round of synthetic benchmarks (no games installed) at stock 670core/1674shader/972mem. First number is exact same system with a 7800gtx, second number is with the 8800gts512.
FFXI-3HI: 8002, 9238
3DMARK01: 34716, 44878
3DMARK03: 21456, 40585
3DMARK05: 9341, 20143
3DMARK06: 5444, 13911

Edit5. OVERCLOCKING. (Stability tested via overnight looping of 3dmark06 and atitool)

Make sure you have RT 2.06 or later. 167-series and later changed the way 2d/3d clocks are handled in the driver and broke RT 2.05 and earlier. Otherwise you can use 169.21, which should definitely support the G92 GTS and also works with RT 2.06 as I'm running them now.

Was on Rivatuner's Forum this morning. Developer (UnWinder @ Guru3d) said Rivatuner won't fully support the G92 GTS until version 2.07 is released.

You can use Ntune however, not the best overclocking app but it works supposedly.

Doh, guess it is broken with a GTS. Well, until they update there's always Ntune. It sucks but better than nothing lol. :(

Thanks! I'll take your advice. I will wait for the next series card (9). I guess I felt into the trap of the latest offerings.

Well, I called FedEx because the website still has not updated since it left City of Industry, CA. They told me there was a delay. I decided to not get upset, but I am upset about 1 thing. 1) Why the fluck does the website not report this? Is it so much to ask to be informed of such things? Most people are pissed not because of delays, but because of lack of communication. I guess no one really seems to understand that.

Anyway, it looks like Monday, but even then I am not putting money on it.
