I have one general worry which maybe someone will know more about. It seems to me that if I were a card maker, I'd be testing all my products prior to boxing to see which have great OC potential, and then stashing those aside to market later as factory OCs.. If that were true, it means the stock cards being sold have already kind of been picked through and the best taken out.
I've bought the vanilla EVGA cards and clocked them myself back to the 5700 series. I've never had a card that wouldn't hit OC's seen on same chip factory overclocked models. Maybe I'm lucky.
In reality, I think factory OC'd cards are 99% marketing. I've searched high and low for proof of a real manufacturer binning process. I've emailed EVGA, BFG, and Gainward and never received repsonses. I've searched the net, and I've posted here. Nothing but theory. I've yet for someone to prove me wrong, but I think there is little or no binning process used.
Am I happy to scoop up the vanilla EVGA 8800 GTS, yes! Would I consider step-up unless it's next gen, no!
