here @ the reg they mention amd will have a 3gig lineup for opterons

According to a report on Chinese-language website HKEPC, the 256 and 856 single-core chips will be clocked at 3GHz and contain 1MB of L2 cache. They have a power envelope of 95W, the site claims. The 290 and 890 are dual-core parts clocked to 2.8GHz both with two 1MB L2 caches for a total of 2MB per processor.

hopefully by the time AM2 comes out, AMD may be able to have higher clocks again.

looking better for AMDs AM2 i would imagine

I'm still going to wait for Conroe. Only those who do not want to wait that long or those that are stubborn AMD loyalists would care.

When does the waiting stop!

First you'll wait for Conroe, then you'll wait for the Conroe 42nm, then the K8L and then the K10.
Honestly, when people such as AdamK47 talks about waiting, he simply tells the world that he wants to wait forever.

Conroe is supposedly only 1 quarter away, though. Not really much waiting unless it gets delayed.

Yep your just delaying your purchase for a much better processor. Remmeber it was a 2.8 ghz chip that conroe killed.

It's easier to wait on a processor that makes a leap beyond what's currently out there vs waiting on a processor that is a speed bump on what's currently out there. Waiting on Conroe is understandable.

opteron 165 was a leap for me.

I didn't feel like twiddling my nut hair and doing mediocre things on my old PC forever.

Guess, I am just different. If most people had the mindset of waiting and waiting for a superleap... then hell, no one would buy cars until they could fly.

No, I upgrade my motherboard and CPU once a year. Rather than getting am AM2 and A64 I'd rather wait for the Conroe for the yearly upgrade. It's as simple as that.

Problem is 2.8ghz or 3ghz will not change the results...

INstead we will have a chip undoubtedly over 110watt TDP...no OC headroom, hot out of the gate...

The only benefit this does is drop the price of the lower speed chips and perhaps mean more lower ones can hit 3ghz with OCing...

However as it stands my dual dual 270's box will suit me fine for now....

I am already going to swap mobos for an Nvidia one so I can OC these chips...0604's CCBWE should have at least 2.4ghz out for them, or basically 280's...

Then this late summer I will look at building a blazing fast conroe box

AMD fans who hang onto news of mhz race (how odd this story seems reversed...) and just ramping speed as a reason not to buy Intel Conroe if it is what it was touted as...are stubborn and overly brand loyal...some could say Fanboys!!!!

Well if they were going to have cars that could fly in a few months then I would wait ;-).

In my opinon if you wait, you will wait forever. Its just that when you do wait make sure you buy at the right time. I myself decided to wait until something matures or is near its ends life cycle so i can get it for cheap. For example i just bought a s939 rig for a pretty good deal and is pretty high end. In reality no computer is going to last you 5+years depending on what you do with it.
