Man being an in-demand coach is a nice gig these days. Rivers signs with Clippers through 2019 for over 50M. I think with Doc locked in there's little chance Blake, CP3 or the franchise are leaving anytime soon.

I am surprised by the length of the deal. I think if Ballmer had a couple of years of NBA ownership experience under his belt he definitely wouldn't agree to a 5 year deal.

The FIBA games should be on either ESPN or NBA TV.

Aren't most coaching deals 5 years now, especially for one so proven as Doc Rivers? Balmer is a business man, he knows the value Doc brings to the team and he knows they need some good news following the Sterling crap. Showing all the fans, the players, and the league, "Hey, we are still here and staying," is only going to improve the brand.

$50 million is a lot of money for a coach. The only coaches I would even consider giving that kind of money to are Phil and Pop, and even then 5 years is too long of a commitment.

I think it's because Ballmer is a new owner, and new owners are always happy to spend whatever amount of money in the beginning.

If the coach can convince the nucleus of Griffin and Paul to sign on for long-term deals, it could easily pay for itself through merchandising and ticket sales over the next 5 years. Let's face it, until 5 years ago, the Clippers were basically the worst team in the history of ALL North American pro sports. If they lose Griffin and Paul, they could find themselves in that purgatory again for another three decades.

It's a lot of money, but at the same time there are only a handful of coaches in the NBA with a rep like Rivers - there are no upgrades available really. Plus it's one of the few moves that can have such a drastic, direct impact on the team while not affecting your cap/tax situation.

And, one could argue, Rivers is at least twice as proven as Fisher and Kerr who both netted 5 year $25 million deals.

I don't think this is about Balmer being a new owner and overpaying because he is inexperienced as much as it is about Balmer knowingly overpaying to ensure his new franchise isn't put back into the Clippers of old stage. Making sure Rivers is leading that team is going to help ensure CP3 and Griffin stay, plus make players want to come. It is a good business move, IMO.

I guess I just have a different opinion of Rivers, but even if you think he's worth $10 million a year, then sign him for 3 years, not 5. What's he gonna do, leave $30 million on the table and go coach a small market team that couldn't afford that much even if it wanted to? It's not like he would have to leave after 3 years, you just sign an extension when you reach that point. Bad negotiating by the Clippers IMHO, there was no reason to make the deal that long.

I'd just be wary as a Clippers fan, long term contracts are not good, be they for a player or a coach.

Holy shit Spain falls to France in the FIBA WC. I was looking forward to the Spain/US matchup lol.

I know what a shocker. I don't think France has any chance against the US so this is very anticlimactic. The only interesting thing about this whole tournament was a USA/Spain final.

Wow, France will not do well. I've only heard of one of their PGs, Diot - probably going to be a massacre, but the French do have some good defenders.

Cavs Sign Forward Shawn Marion.

When will Ray Allen Sign?

I'm hearing that it will be midseason. He can stay in shape on his own, spend time with family, then check in late season and be ready for the playoffs.

LOL. Now that would be the ultimate ring chasing.

"I'm so non-committed that I'm not even going to commit until I know how good that team really is come February".

I don't blame the guy. He's basically 40...and in NBA years more like 125 once you count the playoff runs he's made. He also is one of the few that I think has the discipline and gym rat nature to stay in "NBA" shape outside of a real season and step in and be ready to play at any moment.

A team like the Thunder, Bulls or Hawks could use him. I'm not sure he's very open in going to a non-top 4 right now, though.

Well it would work for whatever team as well, I mean anybody that wants Ray (or perhaps that Ray wants) cares more about having him for the playoffs than for the regular season and should be able to make the playoffs without him.

He's not going to go somewhere that he'll be at the end of the bench. He'll want to contribute, so that's why I listed the teams I did.

Ballmer is forever known as the guy who led MS through a lost decade. He bought Nokia's mobile division a couple years ago just so the new boss can axe 12k of its employees. I doubt a couple years of NBA experience would help him make better decisions.

The thing about Rivers is that he's widely considered one of the game's great active coaches. His players absolutely love him and in a star-driven league, that matters a heck of a lot. But there is a minority of NBA fans who think he's overrated and benefited greatly from Thibodeau's defensive coaching and the talent that the 2008 Celtics put together. Remember Rivers was perennially on the hot seat until Ainge brought the Big-3 together. If he doesn't lead the Clips to the promised land within a few seasons, you'd almost have to believe that minority is right.

France played a helluva game, no doubt a very emotional one, against their hated Spanish rivals. Gobert, 7'8" wingspan, is a monster defender inside (altho I expect the US to get him in foul trouble if they play France.)

While the #1 seeded contender has been knocked out, I don't expect the road to a championship to be any easier, as they will still be playing a couple teams that are playing great together, are balanced, and have a tremendous amount of talent.

edit: oh cr@p...I missed the first half against Lithuania. :( 70-44 now in the 3rd...no such thing as a 'road to the finals' now but I don't expect the finals to be this easy.

Bledsoe finally signs with the Suns for 5y/70m (up from initial offer 4y/48m). Hope he stays healthy, would love to see PHX continue to trend upward.

And Bill Simmons suspended by ESPN for a few weeks regarding comments he made on Gooddell. I actually like Bill lol, I hope this doesn't preclude Grantland's NBA Preview, was looking forward to that.

It is delayed.

I like Bill as a writer - there's few who are as good as him, in that regard. As for his TV spots, I think he's terrible. He doesn't convey his opinion very well.

I'm surprised they suspended him given that every single talking head on that network has said Goodell is lying and needs to go. I mean, seriously, not a single person has come out in favor of Goodell. What an asinine response. Although I do hope he gets shitcanned from the NBA broadcasts. I like Simmons as a writer, but he doesn't do it for me as a post-game analyst.

I like that he's enthusiastic as an analyst at least but no not the most eloquent/well spoken. He's definitely a much better writer (one of my favorites) and more enjoyable to listen to in an informal format like the Grantland podcasts.

And I think it was as much how he said it as what he said. Profanity laced and very defiantly - I would imagine the higher ups at ESPN weren't real fond of the "I really hope somebody calls me or emails me and says I’m in trouble for anything I say about Roger Goodell, because if one person says that to me, I’m going public" tone.
