GM needs to bring back the Saturn L-Series. Seriously. Every other fvcking car around here is an L-series. I know more than a dozen people who drive them. They're pieces of crap, but that didn't affect sales. I realize most people hated it, hell, I hate it, but it's more omnipresent than any other vehicle in my experience. Of course, if this isn't the story nationwide...
The early L-series were okay. My gf has an 01 L200 with near 60K miles on it. They custom ordered it from the factory. Unfortunately it did have a couple serious problems early on, mainly a rear main oil seal leak. Then when the morons at the dealership went to fix it, they ****** up and only put a gasket/sealant (don't remember which) on one side or something and not on the other, i.e. worse oil leak. Once fixed, the car ran very nice. I think the only other issue the car had is a couple odd noises from the suspension, they replaced a stabilizer link bar I believe at one point.
The 2.2L Ecotec is an awesome freakin' engine. With GM's standard old 4EAT it is actually rather fun to drive. Pull out on a busy road, plant the throttle half way down, and the engine just stays in the 3-4K RPM range and pulls nicely to accelerate into traffic smoothly. It passes great on the highway and can get 25MPG+ city & 30MPG+ highway
Now I must say, the interior on the L-series is
utter freakin' crap. Besides everything looking like cheap, brittle plastic, there are so many rattles and squeaks in the interior it's not funny. For the past few years we've stuck a wadded up piece of paper in the passenger's side door seal when closing the door to absorb an ultra annoying squeak that happens when my big ass is in the car.
Aside from the interior, the drivetrain rocks and the handling is great. Very little body roll, fells very stable. Horrible understeer of course and a very un-communicative steering setup. I took a hard right turn around 30-40mph and without any warning (very little body roll, no pull from the tires at all) the front tires were just squealing like bitches with severe amounts of understeer. The car peeled through the turn fine and I was no where near losing any kind of control, but you couldn't feel the road pulling at the wheels at all. They just broke free
😛 Part of that is to blame by the tiny 195/60?/15 tires. Guess I'm used to my Subaru, comparatively you can really feel the road.
The exterior was always sharp I thought, simple and styling. The 02's were okay, but I think in 03 they fvcked up the L-series royally with the new front end.
If Saturn made another L-series with a high quality interior, 6-speed auto, and Ecotec engine, I'd hit it
But then again, GM != quality interior
BTW, my gf is selling her Saturn if anyone's interested
😉 She just got a new Civic
