Rumors:

1) New iPod Touch
2) New iPod Nano
3) New iTunes
4) New tablet??

I'm ready for a new iPod touch though. Why the camera? I don't know. I suppose it'll make it easier to tweet on the go for me although I'll still need that wifi connection. I don't need another crappy camera do I? But I'll welcome it if the new iPod is cheaper.

official with one post?

Looks like no camera for the touch.

The new ipod nano seems nice. I was surprised to see them add the video camera capabilities to the nano and not the touch. I think it's nice they put a pedometer built into the nano. I like the microphone/speaker - I guess it would really depend on the quality of these addons to see if the nano is actually any better. I can't imagine that camera being very nice. It's nice to see it get a FM radio.

I don't really dig the "gaming" angle they're pushing for the ipod touch/iphone though I guess it makes sense that they would.

I don't really use itunes so the changes don't really sway me one way or another. They certainly aren't enough to get me to switch to it.

I don't get the geniusmix thing? It just provides a playlist based on genre? Is this different than just sorting by genre and shuffling that way?

No tablet news which I think at this point most people suspected.

New iPod Nano is nice, although I think they completely overplayed the video camera in it. Seriously, it's much worse than the Flip's.

I feel bad for Apple, though, because Microsoft seems to have outdone them with the Zune HD. Microsoft has the better hardware, and Apple sure as hell does not want to compete with them on software...

The 8GB one is the same as the 2nd Gen touch, so I'd say grab refurbs from Apple or if you get a good clearance price on the higher models.

The 32 and 64 GB ones have the newer iPhone 3GS processor. It also has a newer sound chip, which I've read at least one person say is the best sounding iPod they've owned (and they've had a bunch including the 3GS iPhone which was considered the best by quite a few people). It also has a draft-n capable wireless chip, and an FM receiver/transmitter (well, the bluetooth chip used has those two built in, but Apple has not enable it to work and who knows if they will or not, although third party software might).

The camera definitely is gimmicky, although I don't see any reason to complain about its inclusion (not saying you are, just people are hating on it, granted it could be a lot better). They definitely dropped the ball by not including it on the new Touch (there even seems to have been room made specifically for it). If anything they should have given it the same capabilites as the iPhone's camera.

Not sure what you mean Apple doesn't want to compete with them on software since the App Store gives Apple a huge advantage, and only time will tell if the ZuneHD will live up to its potential (I think it will as its spearheading some big changes to Microsoft's mobile device stuff). I certainly don't feel bad for Apple, as the iPhone is really where its at, and it'll be months still before Microsoft gets a serious competitor there, and by then, Apple will probably have the ability to go lower price if they need to (an iPhone Nano free under contract for instance). The good news is that Apple is going to be getting some serious competition, and in fact this whole market will (Android, Microsoft's WinMobile and Zune, and Apple).

By and large, this year's iPod even seems lackluster, and even Apple fans have grumbled that it was a big letdown. I think Apple is either waiting for some newer chipsets (Tegra to mature? Snapdragon? Maybe Intel's next Atom series?) for their rumored tablet (gaming and multimedia seem to be a big focus for it, so I don't think the current hardware will cut it, especially if it has a higher resolution screen). Despite what Jobs says, the Touch is not a serious competitor in that realm, yet at least.

Wouldn't the next logical choice for a camera be "a digital camera" rather than "a Nano"?

Well the idea is product differentiation and that the Nano is getting squeezed out of existence. It was introduced when the classic was THE iPod to get. Nano made the iPod more affordable (people cried about $299 remember) and offered a flash based MP3 player system with lower capacities.

Well the touch IS a flash based player with touchscreen capabilities and essentially smartphone capabilities (minus the phone). If you throw too much onto it, why buy an iPhone? Apple will have more troubles marketing a tablet if the iPhone/iPod Touch can do everything a computer can which is what they're pushing now. They pushed gaming with the 2G iPod. Now it's a computer that can game and more.

Why buy a Nano? If you want that cheap storage I suppose, but seriously I'd sacrifice 8GB and $20 and upgrade to an 8GB iPod Touch anyday for even more fun.

To prevent the Nano from getting killed off and offering different products, you can go many ways:

1) Want a video camera? Nano/3GS
2) Want still pics? 3GS
3) Want touchscreen and apps? 3GS/iPod touch
4) Want 16GB? Nano
5) Want something that does it all? 3GS

Apple sprinkles a little bit of everything across the iPod line so you have a reason to buy that product. You can't get it all unless you go all out with a 3GS....
